Chapter 9 - THE NEW SPRING

Six months later.

May came to the city in a burst of brilliant sunshine, green trees, and warm ocean breezes rolling off the bay.

At the university music conservatory, the annual spring cello recital was taking place in the grand mahogany hall. Three hundred students, faculty members, and parents sat in the auditorium, watching the stage.

Sitting in the center of the stage was Lily Walker.

Her jaw had healed perfectly. The micro-titanium plates beneath her skin were completely invisible, leaving her face as clear, beautiful, and radiant as it had been before the attack. Her dark chestnut hair flowed over her shoulders, and her hazel eyes shone with absolute focus as her hands moved across the strings of her cello.

She played Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major.

The music filled the grand hall—rich, powerful, breathtakingly beautiful, carrying a passion and strength that moved half the audience to tears.

In the third row sat Daniel Walker.

He was wearing a simple, dark grey suit, his graying hair neatly combed, his hands resting quietly on his knees. Sitting beside him was Silas Vance, wearing his sharp bespoke suit, smiling warmly as he watched the girl play.

"She plays like her mother," Silas whispered softly to Daniel.

"No," Daniel replied softly, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. "She plays like herself."

When the final note echoed through the hall, the auditorium erupted into thunderous, standing applause.

Lily stood up from her chair, holding her cello, bowing gracefully to the cheering crowd.

Her eyes searched the audience until she found her father sitting in the third row.

She smiled—a wide, brilliant, radiant smile that illuminated the entire room—and gave him a quiet, subtle sign-language gesture with her right hand:

May you like

I LOVE YOU, DAD.

Daniel stood up, clapping proudly, his dark eyes filled with warmth, love, and absolute peace.
