Chapter 4 - THE LESSON IN BLACKWOOD

Tyler Whitmore tried to crawl backward, his crushed ribs leaking agony into his lungs with every breath. "Please... please, Mr. Walker... it was an accident! We were drunk! We didn't mean to hurt her that bad! Ethan hit her first! I swear to God, Ethan hit her first!"

"You lying bastard!" Ethan shrieked, clutching his broken jaw as tears streamed down his cheeks. "You're the one who brought the brass knuckles from your locker! You said she needed to be taught a lesson because her father didn't return your dad's calls about the dock leases!"

Daniel sat quietly in the chair, watching them turn on each other like cornered rats.

"Her jaw is broken in six places," Daniel said, his tone conversational, as if he were discussing the weather. "She cannot speak. She cannot eat solid food for three months. She has blood behind her left ear."

He stood up from the chair.

"Mr. Walker! Please!" Brandon Hale begged, clutching his ruined nose, blood pouring through his fingers onto his silk shirt. "My mother is a State Senator! She can make all of this go away for you! We’ll pay for the hospital! We’ll give you millions! Ten million dollars! Just let us go!"

Daniel reached into his canvas jacket resting on the chair. He pulled out a black plastic case, opened it, and laid three steel items on the glass table.

Three heavy, steel surgical bone-pliers.

The boys froze, their breath catching in their throats, their eyes dilating in pure, unadulterated terror.

"You boys believe your families can erase anything," Daniel said softly, picking up the first set of pliers. "You believe that money is a eraser that wipes away blood. You believe that power is something given to you by your parents' bank accounts."

He stepped toward Ethan Cole.

"No!" Ethan screamed, thrashing wildly against the rug. "No! Don't touch me! DON'T TOUCH ME!"

Daniel moved his left foot forward, planting his heavy boot directly onto Ethan’s knee, pinning him to the floor with three hundred pounds of downward pressure. He reached down with his gloved left hand, locking Ethan’s jaw in a vise grip that rendered the boy completely immobile.

"This is not revenge," Daniel whispered into Ethan’s ear as the boy wept hysterically. "Revenge is emotional. Revenge is sloppy. This is an arithmetic correction."

CRACK.

Ethan Cole’s scream was cut short as his collarbone snapped beneath Daniel’s focused pressure.

Daniel moved to Brandon Hale. He didn't use the pliers on their faces. He didn't break their jaws. He broke the lead shoulder and key fingers of each boy’s dominant hand with terrifying, methodical precision—ensuring that for the rest of their natural lives, every time they reached for a glass of champagne, a pen, or a steering wheel, their bodies would remind them of 11:47 PM behind the university science building.

When it was over ten minutes later, the three boys lay sobbing on the floor, broken, ruined, and completely shattered in spirit.

Daniel picked up his canvas jacket, pulled it on, and zipped it up to his chin. He gathered the surgical tools, wiped the glass table clean with a cloth, and walked toward the front entrance.

He paused at the door, looking back over his shoulder at the three boys weeping in their own blood.

"Call your parents now," Daniel told them quietly. "Tell them to gather every lawyer, every judge, and every politician they own."

He opened the heavy oak door, stepping out into the cold mountain fog.

"Tell them The Ghost is coming for their world next."
