Chapter 6 - THE CLEANUP OF THE SHADOWS

By 1:00 PM, the storm clouds over the city had cleared, leaving behind a cold, crisp blue afternoon sky.

Inside Saint Jude’s Hospital, the atmosphere on the ICU floor had changed completely.

The incompetent campus security guards had been removed. Precinct Detective Miller had been suspended from duty pending an internal affairs investigation into missing evidence. Two world-renowned reconstructive facial surgeons, flown in on a private jet from Johns Hopkins, were currently reviewing Lily’s medical files in a private conference room.

Daniel walked down the quiet corridor, holding two warm cups of chamomile tea.

Standing outside Lily’s room was Silas Vance.

Silas was sixty-five years old now, wearing a dark grey bespoke suit, holding a thin leather tablet. He looked like an elder statesman of international finance, but his sharp eyes moved constantly, scanning every corner of the hallway for security threats.

"Boss," Silas said softly, bowing his head slightly as Daniel approached.

"How is she?" Daniel asked, handing one of the tea cups to his old friend.

"The Hopkins surgeons say the damage can be entirely repaired," Silas reported, a soft smile touching his weathered face. "They’re using micro-titanium plating developed by our bio-tech division. In six months, there won't even be a scar. She’ll look exactly the same as she did before."

Daniel let out a long, quiet breath, the tension in his broad shoulders finally relaxing for the first time in eighteen hours. "Thank God."

"What about the parents?" Silas asked, tapping his tablet screen. "Richard Cole filed for emergency bankruptcy an hour ago. Senator Hale’s legal defense team is resigning because her accounts are frozen. Arthur Whitmore is currently being questioned by the SEC regarding twenty million dollars in missing university endowment funds."

"And the Dean of Student Affairs?" Daniel asked, his voice hardening. "The one who authorized the camera override behind the science building?"

"Marcus Thorne," Silas said, pulling up a file on his tablet. "He resigned thirty minutes ago. He was caught at JFK Airport trying to board a private flight to the Cayman Islands with four hundred thousand dollars in cash in his luggage. The Port Authority Police intercepted him at the gate."

"Good," Daniel said quietly.

"Boss..." Silas hesitated, looking closely at Daniel’s face. "The Federal Bureau of Investigation is asking questions. They know that whoever pulled off this financial collapse possessed master-level clearance into the old syndicate networks from twenty years ago. The Special Agent in Charge of the New York field office issued an internal memo twenty minutes ago."

Daniel looked at Silas. "What did the memo say?"

Silas smiled thinly. "It said: The Ghost has returned to the East Coast."

Daniel turned his gaze toward the glass window of Lily’s room. Inside, the young girl was sitting up slightly, supported by soft pillows, watching a nature documentary on the wall-mounted television. Her hazel eyes were open, clear, and bright despite the swelling around her brow.

"The Ghost isn't coming back, Silas," Daniel said softly.

"What do you mean, Boss?"

"The Ghost was a man who lived in the dark," Daniel explained, looking at his hands—the hands that had held his daughter when she was a six-pound infant, the hands that had packed her school lunches, and the hands that had brought down three corrupt dynasties in a single night. "He was a man who thought power came from fear."

He turned to Silas, his dark eyes clear and steady.

"Tell our financial teams to transfer thirty percent of the recovered assets into a permanent endowment for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Burn the rest of the dark-fiber servers. Erase every trace of the satellite phone network."

Silas stared at him in quiet awe, then bowed his head deeply. "It will be done, Boss."
