Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

By 7:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a city in chaotic turmoil.

Inside the private executive boardroom of Cole Infrastructure on the forty-fifth floor of Midtown Tower, three of the most powerful people in the state sat around a mahogany table.

Richard Cole sat at the head, his face pale, his expensive suit coat discarded over his chair. Across from him sat State Senator Eleanor Hale, her eyes sharp, dark, and red from lack of sleep. Beside her was Arthur Whitmore, his hands trembling as he stared at his glowing smartphone screen.

On the central projection screen in the room, three medical reports from an elite private trauma facility showed X-rays of their sons.

"Every single one of them has a compound fracture of the right collarbone and four shattered fingers," Senator Hale said, her voice shaking with quiet, murderous rage. "Ethan’s jaw is dislocated. The doctors say it will take eight months of physical therapy before Tyler can even hold a fork!"

"Who did this?!" Richard Cole slammed his fist onto the table. "I want names! I want every precinct captain in the city on this! I called the Chief of Police three times, and his secretary told me he’s 'out of the office on personal business'!"

"It gets worse, Richard," Arthur Whitmore said, his voice dropping into a terrified whisper. He turned his laptop toward them. "Look at the Asian markets."

Cole leaned forward, squinting at the red numbers cascading down the screen.

"What is this?" Cole gasped.

"At 4:00 AM, an offshore investment firm registered in Luxembourg dumped forty million shares of Cole Infrastructure stock," Whitmore explained, his throat dry. "They executed a naked short position against our primary credit line with Deutsche Bank. As of fifteen minutes ago, our debt-to-equity ratio breached our covenant threshold. The SEC has just issued a trading freeze on our shares."

"That’s impossible!" Cole roared, standing up. "Who owns the Luxembourg entity?!"

Before Whitmore could answer, the double doors of the boardroom slammed open.

Two senior agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation walked into the room, followed by four armed officers. The lead agent held a thick sheaf of paper stamped with a federal court seal.

"Senator Eleanor Hale?" Agent Vance asked calmly.

Senator Hale stood up, pulling her posture straight, her political aura flaring. "What is the meaning of this insolence?! Do you have any idea who I am? I sit on the State Appropriations Committee!"

"Not anymore, Senator," Agent Vance said, tossing the paper onto the table. "You are under federal indictment for wire fraud, campaign finance embezzlement, and obstruction of justice in connection with a twenty-million-dollar land deal in Queens. Federal marshals are currently freezing all forty-two of your campaign and personal bank accounts."

Senator Hale’s breath caught in her throat. She staggered backward, clutching the back of her chair as the color drained completely from her face. "Who... who gave you those documents? Those files were locked in a private vault in Albany!"

"An anonymous whistleblower," Agent Vance replied coldly. "He sent thirty gigabytes of encrypted ledgers to the United States Attorney’s office at three o'clock this morning."

The agent turned to Richard Cole and Arthur Whitmore.

"Gentlemen, I suggest you retain legal counsel immediately," Vance added. "The Grand Jury is convening at ten o'clock to return indictments against Cole Infrastructure for municipal bribery and racketeering."

As the FBI agents led Senator Hale out of the boardroom in handcuffs, Richard Cole collapsed into his chair, his mind spinning in absolute panic.

His phone buzzed on the mahogany table.

It was an unknown, private number.

Cole snatched the phone up, pressing it to his ear with shaking hands. "Who is this?! What do you want from us?!"

Across the city, sitting in a small diner across the street from Saint Jude’s Hospital, Daniel Walker took a slow sip of his black coffee, looking out through the rain-streaked window.

"Richard," Daniel said, his baritone voice smooth and cold as obsidian.

"Is this the bastard who touched my son?!" Cole screamed into the receiver. "I will hunt you down! I will use every dollar I have left to put you in a concrete cell for the rest of your natural life!"

"You don't have any dollars left, Richard," Daniel noted softly. "Check your primary corporate account in Zurich."

Cole’s breath hitched. He frantically typed on his laptop with one hand, opening his private banking portal.

The main balance display read: $0.00.

A small, single line of text sat in the transaction ledger: Transferred to the Saint Jude Children’s Surgical Trust.

"My money..." Cole whispered, tears of absolute horror finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "My money... what did you do to my money?!"

"You thought your family was untouchable because you had capital," Daniel told him calmly. "You thought you could break my daughter’s face and buy your way out of the darkness. But you forgot one thing, Richard."

"What?!" Cole wept. "WHAT DID I FORGET?!"

May you like

"You didn't build this city," Daniel whispered, his voice dropping into a dark, ancient register that made Cole’s blood turn to ice. "I did."

The line went dead.
