Chapter 2 - THE NETWORK AWAKENS

At 2:00 AM, in a sprawling, high-security mansion situated in the hills of Greenwich, Connecticut, Silas Vance sat before a wall of six glowing monitors.

Twenty years ago, Silas had been The Ghost’s primary intelligence officer—the man who mapped out financial networks, tracked political vulnerabilities, and managed shadow logistics across three continents. When The Ghost vanished in 2007, Silas had transitioned into private wealth management, building a multi-billion-dollar risk-assessment firm that catered to international tech giants and sovereign wealth funds.

Yet, deep within the subterranean basement of his estate, Silas had kept the master servers running on an isolated, dark-fiber network. He had prayed every day of his life that he would never hear the phone ring. But now that it had, the old blood returned to his veins with terrifying speed.

"I’ve breached the university’s internal servers," Silas said through the encrypted headset connected to Daniel’s satellite phone. "You were right, Boss. The power surge at 10:00 PM was artificial. It was executed via an administrative override from an IP address registered to the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Marcus Thorne."

Daniel sat in a parked, non-descript gray van two blocks from Saint Jude’s Hospital. He had arranged for a private team of high-security medical guards—men Silas had dispatched via helicopter within forty-five minutes of the first call—to lock down Lily’s ICU floor. No one entered or left her room without military-grade identification.

"Tell me about the boys," Daniel said, his voice as smooth and cold as polished steel.

"Ethan Cole, nineteen," Silas read from the glowing screen. "Varsity lacrosse player, sophomore. Three prior incidents of sexual assault and severe hazing erased from his high school record after his father, Richard Cole, donated two million dollars to the local district attorney’s reelection campaign. Brandon Hale, twenty. Son of State Senator Eleanor Hale. He was caught with three ounces of cocaine and an unregistered firearm last spring; the charges were mysteriously reduced to a civil noise complaint. Tyler Whitmore, nineteen. Son of Arthur Whitmore. He’s the ringleader."

"Where are they right now?"

"They’re at a private lake house owned by the Whitmore family in Blackwood Pines, forty miles north of the city," Silas replied, tapping his keyboard rapidly. "They took a red Porsche 911 registered to Arthur Whitmore. My satellite feeds show three mobile devices active at the lodge. They brought two young women from a local agency and four cases of champagne. They’re celebrating."

Daniel reached down into a heavy steel lockbox sitting on the floor of the van. He key-coded the lock and lifted the lid.

Inside rested two heavy, custom-built Sig Sauer P226 handguns with matte-black suppressors, four spare magazines, a pair of leather tactical gloves, and a sleek, titanium-bladed hunting knife. These were not weapons bought from a store; they were unregistered pieces of ghost hardware, assembled twenty-five years ago with untraceable serial numbers.

"What about their parents?" Daniel asked, sliding one of the magazines into the receiver of a pistol with a sharp, lethal CLACK.

"Richard Cole called the Chief of Police at 1:15 AM," Silas reported. "They’re dispatching a private bio-hazard cleaning crew to the campus science quad right now to scrub the brickwork with industrial acid. Senator Eleanor Hale has already secured a non-disclosure agreement for the campus security guards who were on duty. They’re paying them two hundred thousand dollars each to leave the state by noon tomorrow."

Daniel slipped the pistols into the concealed holsters built into his heavy canvas jacket. He pulled on his black leather gloves, feeling the smooth leather tighten over his knuckles.

"Silas."

"Yes, Boss?"

"Initiate Phase One against their finances. I want their corporate entities bleeding by sunrise."

"Consider it done," Silas said, a dark smile spreading across his face over three hundred miles away. "I’m triggering our short positions on Cole Infrastructure’s European bond holdings right now. By 9:00 AM, Richard Cole’s primary credit lines will be frozen by the Bank of International Settlements. Senator Hale’s campaign accounts will face an automated audit from the Federal Election Commission for offshore laundering within thirty minutes."

Daniel started the van’s silent V8 engine.

"And what about the boys at the lake house?" Silas asked softly.

May you like

Daniel backed the van out of the alleyway, turning his headlights onto the dark, rain-swept highway heading north toward Blackwood Pines.

"I'm going to drop by," Daniel said. "I want to hear them laugh in person."
