Chapter 8 - A Winter in Newport

Four months later.
December had brought a blanket of pure, white snow to the coastal cliffs of Newport. The ocean was a deep, sparkling blue, crashing against the icy rocks below the estate.
The Mercer mansion was transformed into a winter wonderland. Giant pine wreaths decorated with silver ribbons hung from the tall iron gates, and thousands of warm white fairy lights illuminated the soaring facade of the house.
Inside the grand ballroom, the annual Mercer Holiday Gala was in full swing.
Two hundred guests—diplomats, corporate leaders, Supreme Court justices, and local charity heads—chatted warmly while an orchestra played classical waltzes near the grand fireplace.
Emma stood near the entrance of the ballroom, wearing a breathtaking floor-length dark emerald velvet gown that highlighted her striking features and graceful posture. She held a clipboard, efficiently coordinating the service staff with a quiet, authoritative confidence.
“Everything is running impeccably, Director Collins,” the head chef remarked as he walked past, holding a tray of gourmet hors d'oeuvres.
“Thank you, Chef,” Emma smiled warmly. “Make sure the dessert tower is ready for eight o'clock.”
As the chef walked away, a tall, broad-shouldered figure stepped up beside her.
Dominic Mercer looked devastatingly handsome in a black velvet tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, two champagne flutes held in his hands.
He handed one flute to Emma. “You look extraordinary tonight, Emma.”
Emma blushed softly, taking the crystal glass. “Thank you, Dominic. The gala seems to be a complete success.”
“I’m not talking about the gala,” Dominic said softly, his dark eyes fixed entirely on her face. “I’m talking about you.”
He held out his hand toward her. “Dance with me.”
Emma looked at him in surprise, glancing around the crowded ballroom where dozens of high-society guests were watching them. “Dominic... people are watching. I am the Estate Director—”
“You are the woman I want to dance with,” Dominic corrected firmly, his fingers gently closing around hers. “And in my house, no one questions my choices.”
He led her onto the center of the polished dance floor. The orchestra transitioned into a slow, romantic waltz.
Dominic placed his right hand around Emma’s waist, pulling her close against his chest as they began to glide effortlessly across the floor.
Emma rested her hand on his broad shoulder, feeling the powerful, steady beat of his heart beneath his silk suit jacket.
“A year ago,” Emma whispered as they turned under the sparkling crystal chandeliers, “I was standing in the kitchen wing, worried about how I was going to pay for my brother’s college tuition.”
“And today?” Dominic asked, his voice low and incredibly gentle as he looked down into her eyes.
“Today, I feel like I am finally where I belong,” Emma admitted softly.
Dominic tightened his grip around her waist, bringing his face closer to hers. “You belong here, Emma. By my side. Not just as the director of my estate... but as the woman who holds my heart.”
Emma’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked into his dark, sincere eyes, seeing an absolute, unshakeable devotion that went far deeper than any words could express.
“Dominic...” she whispered.
“I love you, Emma,” Dominic said softly, his voice echoing with absolute truth. “I have loved you since the moment I stepped out of that service door and saw you standing up to Brooke without an ounce of fear in your soul.”
Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness welled in Emma’s eyes. She leaned up on her tiptoes, resting her cheek against his chest.

“I love you too, Dominic,” she answered softly. “With all my heart.”
Across the ballroom, standing near the grand fireplace, Natalie held little Noah in her arms, a bright, tearful smile on her face as she watched her brother dance with the woman who had saved their family.
