Chapter 4 - The Arrival of the Law

Ten minutes later, the grand foyer of the Mercer mansion was bathed in the harsh, flashing red and blue lights of two Newport Police cruisers parked outside the main portico entrance.

Rain beat heavily against the soaring stained-glass windows above the oak front doors.

Two uniformed police officers—Officer Miller and Officer Vance—stood inside the foyer, taking notes on digital tablets. Standing beside them was Brooke Harrington, looking frail, elegant, and deeply upset, dabbing at the corner of her eyes with a lace handkerchief.

“I am just so heartbroken, Officers,” Brooke was saying, her voice trembling with practiced emotion. “My late mother-in-law’s South Sea Pearl Choker is worth over four hundred thousand dollars. I noticed the safe in the study was slightly ajar this morning, and when I checked, the necklace was missing. I saw Emma Collins sneaking around the servants' quarters just moments later.”

Officer Miller, a veteran cop who knew the Harrington name well, nodded sympathetically. “We understand, Miss Harrington. Where is the employee now?”

“She is standing right over there,” Brooke pointed a graceful finger toward the library archway.

Emma was standing near the tall mahogany doors of the library, wearing her plain grey uniform, her hands resting calmly in front of her. Beside her stood Natalie Mercer, holding little Noah’s hand tightly. Natalie looked nervous, her eyes darting toward the grand staircase every few seconds.

Brooke walked over to the officers, her posture rigid. “Officers, I strongly suggest you search her room immediately before she has a chance to move the stolen property.”

“Miss Collins,” Officer Vance said, stepping toward Emma. “Do you consent to a search of your personal quarters, or will we need to secure a warrant from the magistrate?”

Before Emma could answer, a deep, powerful voice echoed down from the top of the grand horseshoe staircase.

“There will be no need for a warrant.”

Everyone in the foyer froze.

Brooke’s head snapped upward. The color instantly drained from her face as if she had been struck by a physical blow.

Descending the marble stairs, dressed in a flawless three-piece charcoal suit, white silk shirt, and dark blue tie, was Dominic Mercer. He moved with absolute, unhurried authority, his dark eyes fixed entirely on his fiancée.

“Dominic?” Brooke gasped, her voice choking in her throat. Her phone nearly slipped from her manicured fingers. “You... you’re in London! Your flight wasn't supposed to land until tomorrow!”

Dominic reached the bottom of the stairs, stepping onto the polished marble floor. He didn't look at the police officers. He didn't look at Emma. He walked straight up to Brooke, stopping three feet away from her.

The air in the foyer turned suffocatingly cold.

“My flight landed four hours ago, Brooke,” Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Brooke’s mind raced frantically, her blue eyes darting around the room as she tried to reconstruct her narrative. “Dominic... oh, thank God you’re home! It’s been awful down here! This... this maid of yours, Emma, she stole your mother’s pearl necklace! I caught her red-handed in the staff wing!”

Dominic stared at her for three long, agony-filled seconds. He didn't blink.

“Is that so?” Dominic asked softly.

“Yes!” Brooke insisted, stepping closer to grab his arm, her voice rising in pitch. “I called the police myself to protect your family’s estate! She has the necklace hidden in her wardrobe right now! Search her room, Officers!”

Officer Miller cleared his throat, looking awkwardly at Dominic. “Mr. Mercer... we were just dispatched to handle a grand larceny complaint filed by Miss Harrington.”

Dominic slowly turned his head to look at the two police officers. “Officers, I appreciate your rapid response to my estate. But there has been a terrible misunderstanding.”

“A misunderstanding?” Brooke shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely breaking apart. “Dominic, I saw her! She’s a thief! She’s been taking advantage of your sister’s grief and stealing from this house for weeks!”

Natalie stepped forward, her voice shaking with quiet fury. “That is a lie! Emma has never taken a single thing from this family!”

“Shut up, Natalie!” Brooke snapped, turning on her with venom. “You don't have a say in this household anymore! You and your son are leaving tomorrow anyway!”

The moment those words left Brooke’s mouth, the entire foyer went dead silent.

Officer Miller looked at Officer Vance. The two cops exchanged an uneasy, uncomfortable glance.

Brooke realized instantly what she had just said in front of the police and her fiancé. She gasped, covering her mouth with her hand, her eyes wide with sudden panic. “Dominic... I... I didn't mean it like that... I was just upset about the necklace—”

Dominic raised one hand. A simple, small gesture.

Brooke stopped talking instantly, trembling.

Dominic pulled a small silver remote control from his suit pocket and pointed it at the wall above the grand fireplace.

A large, hidden motor whirred behind the wood paneling, and a high-definition eighty-inch display screen descended from behind an eighteenth-century landscape painting.

“Officer Miller,” Dominic said calmly, keeping his eyes on Brooke. “Before you search Miss Collins’ room, I believe you should view the real-time security footage captured by my estate’s internal monitoring network at 10:12 AM this morning.”

Dominic pressed a button on the silver remote.

The screen flickered to life.

In crystal-clear 4K resolution, the video showed the hallway of the servants' quarters. It showed Brooke Harrington walking down the corridor holding a folded linen towel. It showed her entering Emma’s room.

Then the camera view switched to the internal angle inside Emma’s bedroom.

The video clearly depicted Brooke walking to the wardrobe, pulling Catherine Mercer’s South Sea Pearl Choker out of her linen towel, and shoving it deep into Emma’s top drawer.

The camera audio played loud and crisp through the foyer’s surround-sound speakers:

“You just ruined your own life, you stupid girl,” Brooke’s recorded voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

The video paused on a high-definition freeze-frame of Brooke’s face as she shoved the stolen necklace into the drawer.

Brooke stood frozen in the center of the foyer, her face entirely devoid of color, her mouth open in a soundless scream of horror.

Officer Miller looked at the screen, then down at his tablet, and finally at Brooke Harrington. His expression turned from professional respect to deep, profound disgust.

“Miss Harrington,” Officer Miller said, his voice dropping into a stern, authoritative tone. “Would you mind explaining why you were planting four hundred thousand dollars worth of jewelry in an employee’s bedroom?”

Brooke backed away, her hands shaking violently. “No... no! That video is fake! It’s an AI edit! Dominic, you have to believe me! She set me up! They all set me up!”

Dominic walked slowly toward her, his posture towering, his presence so overwhelming that Brooke backed up until her heels hit the edge of the marble fountain in the center of the room.

“My mother’s estate security system is encrypted with military-grade blockchain verification, Brooke,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register that sent chills through everyone present. “It cannot be edited. It cannot be altered.”

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a thick stack of printed financial documents, tossing them onto the marble edge of the fountain beside her.

“And while we are discussing evidence,” Dominic continued, “these are the bank logs from New England Merchants Bank. Captured at 6:15 AM this morning. Showing you attempting to use my late mother’s hardware encryption token to illegally transfer forty million dollars out of the Mercer Family Trust into an offshore account in Grand Cayman.”

Brooke stared at the papers, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. “Dominic... please... listen to me... my father... my family was in trouble—”

“Your father,” Dominic interrupted coldly, “was arrested by federal agents in Boston twenty minutes ago for wire fraud and conspiracy.”

Brooke collapsed onto her knees on the cold marble floor, her powder-blue silk dress spreading out around her like a fallen flag, her face buried in her hands as she burst into hysterical, uncontrollable sobs.

Dominic did not look down at her with pity. He looked at the two police officers.

“Officers,” Dominic said calmly. “Miss Harrington has committed felony evidence tampering, filing a false police report, attempted grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit trust fraud. Take her out of my house.”

Officer Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

The heavy metallic CLICK of the cuffs locking around Brooke Harrington’s wrists echoed through the grand foyer of the Mercer mansion like the tolling of a funeral bell.
