Chapter 5 - Cleaning House

By one o'clock in the afternoon, the rain outside had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, washed sky over the cliffs of Newport.

The police cruisers had left the estate hours ago, carrying Brooke Harrington away to the county holding facility.

Inside the grand dining room of the mansion, the heavy mahogany table was covered with files, legal ledgers, and laptop computers. A team of four corporate lawyers from Mercer Enterprises sat alongside Detective Hayes—a senior investigator from the state financial crimes unit—analyzing the digital paper trail left behind by the Harrington family.

Dominic stood by the tall bay windows, a glass of dark amber whiskey in his hand, looking out at the Atlantic ocean.

Emma walked into the room carrying a tray with fresh tea for the legal team.

Dominic turned his head as she approached. “Set those down, Emma, and take a seat.”

Emma set the tray down on the corner of the table and sat in one of the high-backed leather chairs.

Detective Hayes looked up from his tablet, giving Emma a warm, respectful nod. “Miss Collins, your calm demeanor this morning made our job infinitely easier. The video footage you helped capture provides absolute probable cause. The state prosecutor’s office has already approved a twelve-count indictment against Brooke Harrington and her brother Julian.”

“What about Julian Harrington?” Emma asked quietly.

“Federal marshals picked him up at Logan Airport at noon,” Detective Hayes revealed. “He was trying to board a private flight to Zurich with two million dollars in bearer bonds in his luggage. He’s looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary.”

Natalie Mercer entered the dining room, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea. She looked exhausted, but for the first time in six months, the suffocating shadow of fear had left her eyes. She walked straight over to Emma, reaching out to place a hand over hers.

“Emma,” Natalie said, her voice filled with deep, emotional warmth. “I don't even know how to thank you. If you hadn't stood up to her in the pantry this morning... if you hadn't told Dominic the truth...”

“You don't need to thank me, Natalie,” Emma said softly. “Your mother hired me to care for this house. That meant protecting the people inside it.”

Dominic walked over to the table, setting his whiskey glass down. He looked down at his sister, then at Emma.

“The wedding is obviously canceled,” Dominic announced, his tone firm and decisive. “My public relations team has already issued a formal press statement citing the complete dissolution of the personal and corporate relationship between the Mercer and Harrington families.”

He turned his gaze directly to Emma.

“Emma, as of this afternoon, Mrs. Gable, our head housekeeper, is retiring with a full pension.”

Emma blinked, caught off guard. “Retiring?”

“Yes,” Dominic said, a rare, genuine warmth touching his dark eyes. “And I am offering you the position of Estate Director. You will oversee all domestic operations, security integration, and staff management for the Mercer properties in Newport and Boston. Salary starts at one hundred and fifty thousand a year, with full health benefits and private housing on the estate grounds.”

Emma gasped softly, her hand pressing against her chest in absolute shock. “Dominic... I... I don't know what to say.”

“Say yes,” Natalie urged with a bright, beautiful smile. “Noah and I need you here, Emma.”

“You proved your loyalty when this house was under attack from the inside, Emma,” Dominic said softly. “In my world, loyalty like yours isn't just rewarded. It is cherished.”

Tears of relief and joy filled Emma’s eyes. For years, she had worked endless hours to support her family, fighting every day just to keep her head above water. Now, standing in the grandest house in New England, she was no longer just a maid in a grey uniform.

She was the guardian of the estate.

“I accept,” Emma whispered, a radiant smile illuminating her face.

Dominic nodded, satisfaction clear in his eyes. He picked up his glass and held it up in a silent, powerful toast.

“To family,” Dominic said softly. “And to the ones who keep it safe.”
