Chapter 5 - THE HUNT BEGINS

At six o'clock on Friday morning, the sun rose over the mist-shrouded waters of Long Island Sound, casting a pale pink light across the slate roofs of the Vale estate.

In the grand master study on the second floor, Adrian sat behind his massive carved walnut desk. The room was illuminated by three computer monitors showing complex financial networks, stock market indexes, and corporate registry databases.

Across from him sat Marcus Vance, Daniel, and a tall, sharp-featured woman named Sarah Lin—the lead forensic accountant for Vale Global Enterprises.

"Here’s the layout," Sarah said, pointing a slender laser pointer at the central monitor screen. "Hale Maritime’s public stock traded yesterday at forty-eight dollars a share. However, using the cloned encryption keys they stole from your private library, Julian Hale initiated three synthetic short positions against Vale Logistics through a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands called Apex Holdings."

"They're trying to sink my stock price," Adrian noted calmly, sipping a cup of strong black coffee.

"Correct," Sarah explained. "They planned to release leaked internal documents—documents they stole from your document safe—suggesting that Vale Global was under federal tax audit. That would cause a sudden fifteen percent drop in your share price on Monday morning. Apex Holdings would make thirty million dollars on the drop, which Julian would then use to cover Hale Maritime's Singapore debt before the SEC auditors arrive on Friday."

"A classic short-and-distort scheme," Marcus Vance added, leaning back in his chair. "Combined with corporate espionage and grand theft."

Adrian set his coffee cup down with a soft, precise click against his saucer. "And where is Vanessa right now?"

Daniel pulled up a GPS tracking map on his tablet. "She’s at the Hale family penthouse on Park Avenue in Manhattan. Her father’s legal team has been holding emergency meetings since three in the morning. They’re panicked, Adrian. They know you canceled the wedding, but they don't know yet that we’ve discovered the vault break-in."

"They think I’m just an angry ex-fiancé who had his pride hurt at dinner," Adrian said softly. A cold, terrifying smile touched his lips. "They think I’m going to sit in my house, grieve for a few weeks, and let our corporate lawyers settle the broken merger quietly."

"What do you want to do?" Daniel asked, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.

"Sarah," Adrian commanded. "Execute Protocol Omega against Apex Holdings immediately."

Sarah Lin’s fingers flew across her keyboard. "Protocol Omega will initiate a counter-buy of thirty percent of Apex Holdings' underlying options through our Zurich banking partners. It will force a margin call on Julian Hale's shell company within two hours."

"Do it," Adrian said. "Bankrupt the Cayman entity by noon."

"Done," Sarah replied, hitting the enter key.

"Marcus," Adrian turned to his attorney. "File a formal emergency injunction with the Federal District Court in Manhattan. Charge Senator Thomas Hale, Julian Hale, and Vanessa Hale with corporate espionage, theft of trade secrets, illegal wiretapping, and criminal conspiracy. Attach the 4K security footage of the cellar break-in and the kitchen incident to the filing."

Vance smiled—a sharp, predatory expression. "The judge will sign the freeze orders on all Hale family personal and corporate assets by two o'clock this afternoon."

"And what about Vanessa personally?" Daniel asked.

Adrian stood up from his mahogany desk, walking toward the high leaded-glass windows that looked out over the ocean.

"Vanessa wanted to play the mistress of this estate," Adrian said, staring out at the grey waves crashing against the rocks. "She wanted to use fear to dominate people who had no power to resist her. Today, she learns what real power feels like when it’s turned against her."

He turned back to face his team.

"Daniel, get the car ready. We’re going to Stamford."

"Stamford?" Daniel blinked. "Why Stamford?"

"Because," Adrian said softly, "before I tear the Hale family empire down to the bedrock, I have a promise to keep to a young woman who works for me."
