Chapter 3 - UNVARNISHED TRUTHS

The staff medical room was small, clean, and painted a pale, soothing blue. It smelled of antiseptic and fresh wool.
Lydia Hart sat on the edge of an examination table, wearing a borrowed dark grey sweater that belonged to one of the kitchen staff. Her dark hair was pulled back into a messy knot, and a thick, white sterile dressing covered her collarbone and extended beneath her collar.
When the heavy door opened and Adrian stepped into the room, Lydia instantly flinched. She started to slide off the table to stand at attention, but Adrian raised a quiet hand.
"Sit down, Lydia," he said gently, closing the door behind him. He dragged a simple wooden chair over and sat across from her, keeping a respectful distance.
"Mr. Vale..." Lydia started, her voice raspy. "I... I have the key to my locker in the staff wing. I can pack my things tonight. I don't want to cause any more trouble between you and the Hale family."
Adrian looked at her carefully. She had pale skin, striking hazel eyes, and faint shadows beneath them that spoke of long hours and constant stress. She was thin, but her posture carried a quiet, stubborn resilience despite the violent shock she had suffered less than an hour ago.
"You didn't cause trouble, Lydia," Adrian said. "Vanessa Hale did."
Lydia looked down at her hands, which were folded tightly in her lap. "She’s your fiancée, sir. Her father is a Senator."
"She was my fiancée," Adrian corrected firmly. "And her father’s political title means nothing inside these walls. I am sorry, Lydia."
Lydia’s head snapped up. Her hazel eyes widened in genuine disbelief. "Sir?"
"I am sorry," Adrian repeated, looking her directly in the eye. "You came to work in my home under the expectation of safety, dignity, and fair treatment. Instead, you were subjected to physical violence, psychological threats, and humiliation. I failed to protect the people who keep this house standing. That is my responsibility, and I take full ownership of it."
Lydia stared at him, her lips parting slightly. For six months, she had viewed Adrian Vale as an imposing, mythical figure—the billionaire boss who moved in high-altitude political circles, a man whose dark eyes and sharp suits inspired total silence whenever he walked into a room. She had expected to be fired, paid off with a non-disclosure agreement, or threatened by the estate’s legal team. She had never expected him to sit on a wooden chair in a basement clinic and apologize to her.
"I... I didn't think you knew, sir," she whispered.
"I didn't," Adrian admitted, his jaw tightening. "Because I was careless. But Daniel told me about the incident with the pearl earrings three weeks ago."
Lydia’s hands clenched tighter against her sweater. A faint tremor ran through her shoulders. "She told me she’d put Toby in prison."
"She was lying," Adrian said coldly. "Vanessa Hale has no authority over the Vale legal team, she has no authority over the local police, and she will never step foot on this property again. Your brother’s job at the Stamford dock is entirely secure. In fact, I am having his supervisor transfer him to our primary logistics crew tomorrow morning, with a thirty percent wage increase and full union benefits."
A quiet gasp escaped Lydia’s lips. She covered her mouth with her trembling hand, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes and running down her pale cheeks. "Mr. Vale... you don't have to do that..."
"It’s already done," Adrian said softly. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small leather-bound card, and set it on the table beside her. "This is the personal contact number for Dr. Aris and my private legal counsel, Marcus Vance. If anyone from the Hale family attempts to contact you, your brother, or your family, you do not speak to them. You call Marcus immediately."
Lydia wiped her cheek with her sleeve, nodding slowly. "Thank you, sir. Thank you."
"Now," Adrian said, standing up from his chair. "You are going to take the next three weeks off with full pay. My driver will take you to your apartment in Stamford tonight, and Dr. Aris will visit you every two days to ensure those burns heal without scarring. If you need anything—anything at all—you tell Daniel."
He turned toward the door, but stopped before pressing his hand against the latch.
"Lydia?"
"Yes, Mr. Vale?"
"Did she touch anyone else?"
Lydia hesitated, her eyes flickering toward the closed door. For a long moment, the only sound in the small room was the steady humming of the fluorescent lights above.
"Not with her hands, sir," Lydia whispered softly. "But... Mrs. Gable’s private office. In the cellar behind the wine vault. Miss Hale spent three hours in there last Tuesday while you were in Washington. She brought two men with her. Men who didn't work for the estate."
May you like
Adrian turned around slowly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Men with camera cases?"
"No, sir," Lydia said, her voice dropping into a fearful whisper. "Men with heavy legal ledgers... and small metal tools."
