Chapter 8 - The Price of Mercy

Pier 17 was a desolate wasteland of rusting shipping containers and rotting wooden planks, battered by the freezing Atlantic wind. The snow fell furiously, blinding visibility and muffling sound.

Inside the dark, drafty warehouse, Marco Conti stood shivering, clutching a leather briefcase containing the access codes to the Jersey supply lines. Opposite him stood three men in heavy fur-lined coats—Russian operatives led by a ruthless enforcer named Nikolai.

"You brought the codes, little Conti?" Nikolai sneered, his yellowed teeth flashing in the dim flashlight beam.

"Yes," Marco stammered, his teeth chattering from fear and cold. "Now give me the documents proving my father was dealing with you. The deal was an exchange!"

Nikolai laughed—a harsh, barking sound that echoed off the metal rafters. He reached into his coat, but instead of pulling out papers, he drew a suppressed pistol, aiming it directly at Marco's chest.

"You are foolish, boy," Nikolai said casually. "Why give you papers when we can take the codes, kill you, and leave your body for Matteo Rienzi to find? The Contis will think Matteo killed you to take full control, and the war will restart. It's much cleaner."

Marco’s blood went cold. He dropped the briefcase, stumbling backward. "No... wait!"

"Goodnight, little prince," Nikolai said, taking aim.

THWACK.

A high-velocity bullet shattered the glass window high above, striking Nikolai directly in the side of his neck. Blood sprayed across the snow-dusted concrete as Nikolai collapsed, gargling on his own blood.

Before the other two Russians could react, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse were kicked open with a thunderous bang.

Flashlights blinded the remaining guards as a hail of gunfire erupted. Matteo’s capos flooded the building, moving with terrifying tactical precision. Within ten seconds, the two remaining Russians were dead on the floor.

Marco fell to his knees, hyperventilating, staring at the corpses surrounding him.

Footsteps echoed across the concrete. A shadow loomed over him.

Marco looked up to see Matteo standing over him, holding a custom black pistol, smoke still drifting from the barrel. Matteo’s face was an unreadable mask of absolute, terrifying fury.

"M-Matteo!" Marco sobbed, tears streaming down his face. "They... they set me up! They were going to kill me!"

Matteo didn't speak. He stepped forward and drove the butt of his pistol hard into Marco's jaw.

Marco groaned, falling flat on his face, tasting copper in his mouth.

Matteo grabbed Marco by the back of his collar, dragging him effortlessly across the floor toward a waiting SUV like a sack of trash. He threw Marco into the back footwell, stepping in after him and slamming the door shut.

"You owe your life to your sister, you pathetic piece of garbage," Matteo snarled, his voice vibrating with pure rage. "If she hadn't come to me, I would have let them put a bullet in your head and dumped your body in the bay."

Marco cowered against the floorboards, clutching his bleeding jaw. "I'm sorry... I was trying to protect Papa's honor..."

"You almost destroyed both of our families!" Matteo roared, leaning down until his face was inches from Marco's. "Listen to me very carefully, Marco. Your father is stepping down tomorrow due to 'health reasons.' You are leaving the country. Tonight. You will be put on a private plane to Sicily. You will live on a farm in the mountains under round-the-clock guard. You will never set foot in New York again. If you ever return, I will execute you myself. Do you understand me?"

Marco sobbed, nodding frantically. "Yes... yes, I understand! Thank you... thank you, Matteo..."

Matteo straightened his coat, looking away in disgust. He pulled out his phone and dialed Isabella.

She answered on the first ring. "Matteo?"

The rage in Matteo's face instantly dissolved, replaced by exhaustion. "He's alive," Matteo said softly. "He's unhurt, mostly. He's being sent to Sicily tonight."

On the other end of the line, Isabella burst into tears of overwhelming relief. "Thank you... oh God, Matteo, thank you."

"I am coming home, Isabella," he murmured, looking out the blacked-out window at the swirling blizzard. "Wait for me."
