Chapter 4 - Shadows and Silk

The rain hammered relentlessly against the tall windows of the master bedroom. The room was dark, lit only by the soft, amber glow of the dying embers in the hearth.
Matteo stood near the foot of the bed, having washed the grime and blood from his hands and face. He wore only a pair of black trousers, his broad chest bare, revealing a map of faded scars—a knife wound near his ribs, a bullet graze across his shoulder. He looked like a warrior resting between battles.
Isabella sat on the edge of the mattress, her heart racing so fast she was certain he could hear it.
He walked over slowly, every movement deliberate, giving her every opportunity to tell him to stop. He knelt on one knee in front of her, bringing himself level with her eyes.
"Are you sure?" he asked softly. "Once we cross this line, Isabella, there is no going back. You won't just be my wife on paper. You will be mine in every way that matters."
Isabella looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of deception. She saw none. She saw a man who carried the weight of the world on his broad shoulders, a man who had just saved her family from destruction, a man who was offering her respect instead of taking it by force.
"I am sure," she said firmly.
Matteo reached up, his large hands carefully gathering the heavy wool throw blanket from her shoulders and letting it drop to the floor. His fingers moved to the bottom of her sweater, his knuckles gently brushing against the bare skin of her waist. A shockwave of heat shot straight down her spine.
"Tell me to stop if you feel uncomfortable," he instructed, his voice thick with restraint. "You hold the reins here, Isabella. Always."
He gently lifted the sweater over her head, setting it aside. Isabella sat in her silk camisole, her heart thumping frantically. She had never been seen like this by a man. She felt exposed, vulnerable, entirely at his mercy.
Matteo didn't rush. He didn't pounce. Instead, he simply looked at her, his eyes dark with an intense, reverent admiration that made her feel beautiful, not dirty.
He raised his hand and gently touched the delicate lace of her strap, tracing it down to her collarbone. "You are breathtaking," he murmured softly.
He leaned in, taking her lips in a kiss that was entirely different from the sterile brush of lips at the altar. This kiss was deep, slow, and consuming. It tasted of rain and restraint. Isabella gasped against his mouth, her arms instinctively rising to wrap around his neck, her fingers tangling in his damp dark hair.
Matteo groaned softly, a low rumble in his chest, as he pulled her closer, his arms wrapping around her waist, lifting her onto the bed as if she weighed nothing.
He lay beside her, shifting his weight so he wouldn't crush her. His touch was a masterclass in control. He kissed her jaw, the sensitive spot beneath her ear, her collarbone, tracing a path of fire down her skin while his hands mapped every curve of her body with agonizing patience.
Every time she whimpered or tense slightly, he paused, murmuring soft words of reassurance against her skin until she relaxed into his touch. He taught her body the language of pleasure, stripping away her fears layer by layer until there was nothing left between them but raw, unfiltered heat.
When he finally came to her, his eyes were locked onto hers, holding her gaze through the pain, the surprise, and finally, the overwhelming wave of pleasure that washed over her.
He moved with a steady, rhythmic grace, holding her close, his warm breath mingling with hers, whispering her name like a prayer in the dark.
In that quiet room, amidst the roaring thunder and the dark violent history of their families, Isabella surrendered not out of duty, but out of choice. And as she clung to Matteo’s muscular back, feeling the rapid beat of his heart against her chest, she knew her life had changed forever.
Morning arrived with a soft, pale sunlight filtering through the curtains.
Isabella opened her eyes, feeling a warm, heavy weight across her waist. Matteo was asleep beside her, one massive arm wrapped around her middle, pulling her flush against his chest. His face was completely relaxed, the hard, terrifying lines of the mafia Don smoothed away by sleep. He looked surprisingly young.
Isabella lay still, listening to the steady rhythm of his breathing. A soft smile touched her lips. She reached out with her free hand, gently tracing the sharp line of his jaw.
Matteo’s eyes fluttered open instantly—a instinct born of years of living in danger. But as his grey eyes focused on her, the sharp alertness instantly softened.
"Good morning," he rasped, his voice rough from sleep.
"Good morning," she replied softly, her cheeks turning slightly pink as she remembered the night before.
Matteo’s arm tightened around her, pulling her a few inches closer until their noses were almost touching. He looked down at the pale sheets, noticing the small, faint spot of crimson on the white linen.
A complex emotion passed over his face—a mix of pride, fierce possessiveness, and deep responsibility. In their culture, that mark was proof of purity, a trophy for a husband. But Matteo didn't look at it like a trophy. He looked at it like a vow.
He leaned down and kissed her forehead gently. "Are you in pain?"
"A little," she admitted softly. "But... I'm okay."
"Good," he said, his thumb caressing her hip. "Because today, the rest of the world comes back. Your father called at six AM."
Isabella sat up, holding the sheet to her chest. "What did he say?"
"He verified the evidence regarding Salvatore," Matteo said, his voice returning to its businesslike tone, though his eyes remained warm as he looked at her. "He's calling an emergency meeting of the Commission at two o'clock. He wants us both there."
May you like
"Both of us?"
"Yes," Matteo said, sitting up and swinging his legs over the bed, his back muscles flexing in the morning light. "The traitor is dead. Now, we show them that the alliance between the Conti and Rienzi families is absolute. We show them that you are not just my wife... you are the Don's wife."
