Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

The aftermath of the Commission meeting cemented Isabella’s new standing. No longer viewed simply as a pawn sacrificed for peace, she was now recognized across New York's underworld as the Don’s formidable wife. Yet, with authority came a target on her back.
Two weeks into their marriage, autumn turned sharply into a bitter, biting winter. Life at the Westchester estate had developed a quiet, comfortable rhythm. Matteo left early for business, but he no longer stayed away past midnight. He made it a point to return for dinner, sitting at the long dining table with Isabella, sharing stories of their days, slowly stripping away the formal barriers that had separated them.
Their nights were passionate and deep, filled with a growing intimacy that surpassed physical desire. Isabella found herself watching the clock not out of fear, but out of anticipation for the heavy sound of his car arriving up the driveway.
However, the truce remained fragile. The elimination of Salvatore Moretti had disrupted the Russian syndicate’s plans to take control of the Brooklyn waterfront, and they were growing desperate.
One chilly Tuesday afternoon, Isabella decided to visit her father in Brooklyn. She felt a duty to check on his failing health, and Matteo had granted permission, sending her with four heavily armed bodyguards and his most trusted capo, a stoic man named Paulie.
The Conti brownstone felt empty and cold compared to the bustling life of the Westchester estate. Vincenzo sat in his dark study, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, sipping tea.
"You look different, Isabella," Vincenzo noted, his hollow eyes searching her face as she sat opposite him. "You carry yourself like a Rienzi."
"I carry myself like a woman who survives, Papa," she replied smoothly, taking a sip of tea. "Matteo treats me with respect."
Vincenzo let out a dry, rattling laugh. "Respect? He is a mob boss, child. He treats you well because you are useful. Don't forget who you are. You are a Conti. If the day comes where he must choose between his empire and you, he will choose the empire."
Isabella felt a cold prickle of anger. "He chose me over his own father’s approval two weeks ago at the Commission. You were there. You saw it."
"That was theater!" Vincenzo snapped, leaning forward, his jaw tight. "That was showing dominance to the other bosses! Do not fall in love with him, Isabella! Love in our world makes you weak. It makes you a target."
"Love didn't make Salvatore betray you, Papa," she said coldly, standing up. "Greed did. Fear did. Maybe if you had shown a little loyalty to the people around you, you wouldn't be sitting alone in this empty house."
Vincenzo flinched as if struck. Isabella felt a sudden sting of regret, but she held her head high. She turned and walked out of the study, heading down the hallway toward the front door.
As she passed Marco’s room, she heard quiet, heated voices through the cracked door.
"I told you, it’s too risky!" Marco’s voice sounded frantic, panicky.
"You don't have a choice, little boy," a deep, heavily accented voice replied—a Russian accent. "Your father is dying. Matteo Rienzi holds all the power now. If you want the Conti name to mean anything, you give us the transport routes through Jersey tonight. Or we leak the documents showing your father was selling out the Commission three years ago."
Isabella froze in the hallway, her blood turning to ice.
Marco was working with the Russians.
She pressed herself against the wall, her mind spinning wildly. Her brother—foolish, hot-headed Marco—was walking right into the exact same trap that had killed Salvatore. If Matteo found out Marco was conspiring with the syndicate, he would have no choice but to execute him to maintain order.

Isabella didn't hesitate. She quietly backed away from the door, rushed out the front entrance, past her startled bodyguards, and climbed into the back of the armored SUV.
"Take me home," she ordered Paulie, her voice trembling. "Now!"
