Chapter 5 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM

The recovery suite on the tenth floor of New York-Presbyterian Hospital was quiet, peaceful, and heavily guarded.

Four private security officers dressed in grey suits stood outside the double doors of the private wing, checking the credentials of every doctor and nurse who approached.

Inside the suite, sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the room with a soft, gold light.

Serena sat up in her hospital bed, wearing a soft silk robe. She looked slightly pale, but her face was serene, completely free of the quiet anxiety that had plagued her features for three years.

In her arms, wrapped in a blue cashmere blanket, lay little Leo. He was sleeping peacefully, his tiny chest rising and falling in a rhythmic, quiet pattern.

Nora sat in an armchair beside the bed, working on an iPad, approving press releases and corporate filings.

“The divorce papers have been officially served to Dante’s legal counsel,” Nora said softly, looking up from her screen. “Along with the immediate asset seizure notices for Romano Group’s Wall Street headquarters and their primary logistics facilities in New Jersey.”

Serena didn't look up from her baby’s face. She gently brushed her finger against Leo’s soft cheek. “Has Carmine called?”

“Twelve times,” Nora replied. “He offered to hand over thirty percent of the syndicate’s private real estate holdings if you pause the execution of the loan defaults for thirty days.”

Serena let out a quiet, cold breath that was almost a laugh. “Thirty percent of land that was purchased with my trust’s money in the first place? Carmine always was a terrible negotiator when he didn't have a gun in his hand.”

A sudden commotion sounded in the hallway outside the suite.

Muffled voices shouted. Heavy footsteps scuffled against the tile floor.

“Sir! You cannot enter this wing!” a security guard’s voice sternly ordered.

“Get your hands off me!” Dante’s voice roared back, laced with pure desperation. “That’s my wife in there! That’s my son! Serena! Serena!”

Serena didn't flinch. She gently handed Leo to Nora, who took the baby and walked into the attached private nursery, closing the soundproof door behind her.

Serena adjusted her silk robe, sat back against her pillows, and looked at the double doors.

“Let him in,” Serena said calmly into her desk intercom.

A second later, the doors burst open.

Dante stumbled into the room. He looked terrible—his eyes were bloodshot, his face pale, his expensive suit wrinkled and disheveled. He looked nothing like the untouchable, arrogant prince of the New York underworld who had commanded every room he walked into.

He stopped five feet from her bed, his chest heaving, his dark eyes locking onto hers.

“Serena...” he breathed out, his voice cracking with emotion.

Serena looked at him with complete, unbothered neutrality. It was an expression far more devastating than anger or hatred. It was the look one gives a complete stranger who has accidentally stepped into the wrong elevator.

“You look tired, Dante,” she said softly.

Dante took two steps forward, dropping heavily onto his knees right beside her bed. He reached out to grab her hand, but Serena calmly shifted her arm out of his reach, resting it in her lap.

Dante’s eyes filled with sudden, hot tears. “Serena... please. Please listen to me.”

“I’m listening,” she said.

“I didn't know,” he wept, grabbing the edge of her hospital bed sheet. “Swear to God, Serena, I didn't know you were in labor! If I had known you were bleeding, I would have burned Paris to the ground to get back to you! My phone was on silent during the dinner... I didn't see the calls until it was too late!”

Serena looked down at him, her dark eyes entirely clear.

“You saw the fourteenth call, Dante,” she said softly. “You saw it, and you sent me a text telling me you were in a meeting.”

Dante froze, his weeping choking in his throat.

“You were sitting on a terrace drinking champagne with Claire Bennett,” Serena continued, her voice steady and smooth as ice. “You knew I was thirty-six weeks pregnant. You knew I had placenta previa. You knew that any sudden contraction could kill me or our child. But you decided that your mistress’s company was worth more than checking on your wife.”

“I made a mistake!” Dante sobbed, resting his forehead against the side of the mattress. “A horrible, unforgivable mistake! I was stupid, I was arrogant, I took you for granted! But please... don't do this to our family! Don't take my son away from me!”

“Our family?” Serena asked, tilting her head slightly. “There was no family, Dante. There was only a man who used a quiet woman as a respectable front for his illegal empire, while treating her like an inconvenient piece of furniture at home.”

She leaned forward slightly, looking directly into his tear-filled eyes.

“You thought I was weak because I didn't yell at you when you came home late,” she said. “You thought I was stupid because I didn't question your fake business trips. You thought I was helpless because I let you pretend to be the powerful head of the household.”

She smiled—a small, cold, breathtaking smile.

“I was never weak, Dante. I was simply patient. I wanted to give you every opportunity to prove that you possessed even a single shred of honor. And last night, you gave me your final answer.”

Dante shook his head frantically, his hand gripping the bed rail. “I’ll change, Serena! I swear to you! I’ll cut all ties with Claire! I’ll hand over my syndicate titles to my father! I’ll do whatever you want! Just give me one more chance!”

The sound of a tiny baby’s cry echoed softly from the attached nursery.

Dante’s head snapped toward the door, his eyes wide with desperate longing. “Is that... is that him? Is that my son? Please, Serena... let me hold him. Just for one second.”

Serena looked toward the nursery door, her expression softening for a fraction of a second, before turning back to Dante with absolute stone rigidity.

“You lost the right to hold him at 2:53 this morning, Dante,” she said.

She pressed the call button on her bedside console.

Four heavy security guards stepped into the room immediately.

“Escort Mr. Romano out of the building,” Serena ordered, her voice completely flat. “If he attempts to enter this wing again, file formal trespassing charges with the District Attorney.”

“Serena! No! Please!” Dante screamed as the guards grabbed him under the arms, lifting him off his knees and dragging him backward out of the suite. “Serena! I love you! Please!”

Serena picked up her cup of warm tea from the bedside table, took a quiet sip, and did not look back once as the heavy doors slammed shut behind him.
