Chapter 10 - THE EMPIRE OF PEACE

Two years later.

The afternoon sun shone brightly over the rolling green lawns of the Greenwich estate.

A large wooden gazebo had been built near the edge of the private lake, surrounded by vibrant beds of white lilies, red roses, and blooming jasmine.

It was Leo’s third birthday party.

The lawn was filled with the joyful sounds of children laughing, music playing from outdoor speakers, and the gentle clinking of glasses as guests enjoyed fresh fruit punch and iced tea.

There were forty guests present: local community leaders, doctors from the hospital foundation, staff from the estate, and several close friends Serena had reconnected with over the past two years.

Leo was running across the lush grass, wearing a tiny white linen shirt and shorts, kicking a small soccer ball toward a mini goal net.

Nora Greer sat in a comfortable wicker armchair under the shade of the gazebo, watching the boy with a look of grandmotherly pride.

Serena stood near the edge of the lake, wearing a breathtaking yellow summer dress that caught the soft warm breeze. Her long dark hair flowed loosely over her shoulders, her smile bright and radiant as she watched her son score a goal and let out a triumphant cheer.

A distinguished, kind-faced man in his late thirties walked up beside her, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade.

His name was Julian Mercer. He was a respected pediatric surgeon at New York-Presbyterian—a man who knew nothing about syndicate wars, illegal money laundering, or mafia power plays. He was gentle, cultured, soft-spoken, and treated Serena with a quiet, profound reverence that made her heart feel completely safe.

“He’s getting fast,” Julian smiled, handing her a glass of lemonade. “In two years, he’s going to be outrunning every kid on the school field.”

Serena accepted the glass, her eyes fixed on Leo with deep, overwhelming love. “He has too much energy for his own good.”

Julian looked at Serena, his eyes soft and filled with genuine affection. “He has a good mother.”

Serena turned her head, looking into Julian’s kind eyes.

There were no secrets between them. Julian knew about her past, knew about the collapse of the Romano syndicate, and knew the fierce, uncompromising independence that defined her life. He didn't try to control her; he didn't try to manage her wealth; he simply loved her for the extraordinary woman she was.

“Thank you for being here today, Julian,” Serena said softly, leaning over to gently touch his arm.

“I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world, Serena,” Julian replied warmly.

Across the lawn, Leo kicked the soccer ball into the net once more, turned around, and spotted his mother standing by the lake.

“Mommy! Look! I scored!” the little boy shouted, his cheeks flushed red with excitement, his tiny legs pumping as he sprinted across the green grass toward her.

Serena set her lemonade glass down on a table, knelt on the soft grass, and opened her arms wide.

Leo launched himself into her arms, burying his face against her shoulder, his little hands wrapping tightly around her neck.

Serena lifted him into her arms, swinging him around in a circle as the warm autumn sun showered them in golden light.

She looked up at the endless blue sky above her estate.

The dark shadows of the past were completely gone. The blood on the marble floor, the fourteen unanswered calls, the arrogance of men who thought they owned the world—all of it had been burned away, leaving behind a foundation of unshakeable strength, peace, and eternal love.

She held her son tight against her heart, kissed his forehead, and smiled into the bright, clear future they had built together.
