Chapter 2 - THE FRENCH CONNECTION

While Serena was lying in a pool of blood on the floor of the Manhattan penthouse, three thousand miles away in Paris, Dante Romano was pouring another glass of Dom Pérignon into a crystal flute.

The private terrace of the rooftop suite at the Four Seasons George V offered a sweeping, panoramic view of the lit Eiffel Tower rising into the dark French night. The air was crisp, carrying the faint, romantic scent of night-blooming flowers and rain.

Claire Bennett sat across from him on a velvet outdoor sofa, wearing a silk emerald green robe that draped loosely over her shoulders. She twirled a diamond necklace—a twenty-thousand-dollar gift Dante had purchased at Cartier on Place Vendôme earlier that afternoon—around her index finger.

“You’ve been staring at your phone for twenty minutes, Dante,” Claire said, her voice laced with a subtle, pouty irritation. “If Chicago is bothering you that much, tell your lieutenants to handle it.”

Dante set the bottle down on the marble table, his brow furrowed as he looked down at the dark glass screen of his iPhone.

Fourteen missed calls.

All from Serena.

Followed by a single text from him: In a meeting. Call you later.

A strange, uncomfortable tightness settled in his chest, a sensation he immediately dismissed as simple fatigue. Serena was thirty-six weeks pregnant, fussy, and increasingly emotional over the past month. She was likely calling to complain about her minor physical discomforts, or perhaps she had discovered that he wasn't actually in Chicago.

It didn't matter. Serena was quiet, obedient, and entirely dependent on his family's protection. She had no real family left of her own—or so he had always believed—and she had spent the last three years playing the quiet, supportive mafia wife who stayed out of syndicate affairs.

“It’s nothing,” Dante said, sliding the phone face-down onto the table. He picked up his champagne glass and smiled at Claire. “Just Serena being dramatic about her schedule.”

Claire laughed softly, taking a sip of her champagne. “She really is quite exhausting, darling. She acts as if she’s the only woman in New York who has ever carried a child. You’re the president of Romano Group. You have an empire to run. She should be grateful you provided her with a five-million-dollar penthouse.”

Dante didn't answer right away. He looked out at the Eiffel Tower, the quiet feeling of unease lingering in the back of his mind.

He had married Serena Vale three years ago under intense pressure from his father, Carmine Romano. At the time, the Romano syndicate was facing severe liquidity shortages, federal tax investigations, and aggressive expansion attempts by rival families from New Jersey.

Carmine had insisted that marrying Serena—a quiet, cultured woman from an old-money New England background—would clean up the family’s public image and give them access to legitimate corporate boards.

It had worked beyond their wildest expectations. Within eighteen months of the marriage, international banks that had previously blacklisted Romano Group suddenly approved multi-million-dollar credit lines. Municipal construction permits were granted overnight. Port authorities ceased their aggressive inspections of Romano shipping containers.

Dante had assumed it was his own brilliant leadership, aggressive negotiation tactics, and ruthless reputation that had turned the syndicate into a modern corporate titan.

He had never once stopped to ask why those doors had opened only after Serena Vale signed her name to the family registry.

“When are we returning to New York?” Claire asked, leaning over to rest her head against his shoulder.

“Sunday,” Dante replied, stroking her hair absentmindedly. “I have to meet with my father on Monday morning to finalize the buyout of the Brooklyn waterfront docks. Once that deal closes, Romano Group will control every private shipping berth from Queens to Bayonne.”

“And Serena?” Claire asked, her eyes gleaming with ambitious anticipation. “When are you going to tell her that we’re moving into the Hampton estate?”

“After the baby is born,” Dante said coldly. “She can keep the Westchester house and a generous allowance. She won't cause trouble. She doesn't have the stomach for a public fight.”

His phone vibrated against the table.

Dante reached down and picked it up, expecting another frantic message from his wife.

It was not Serena.

It was a priority notification from his chief financial officer, Julian Vance, in New York.

Dante unlocked the screen and opened the encrypted message.

Dante. We have a catastrophic situation. You need to log into the executive portal immediately.

Dante frowned, tapping his screen to open the private corporate portal for Romano Group.

The screen loaded, and a massive, flashing red alert appeared across the top of the interface:

WARNING: EXECUTIVE ACCESS REVOKED. ACCOUNT SUSPENDED BY PARENT HOLDING ENTITY.

Dante sat up straight, his face hardening. “What the hell is this?”

He dialed Julian Vance’s direct line. The officer answered on the very first ring, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated panic.

“Dante! Where are you?”

“I’m in Paris! What is going on with the portal, Julian? Why am I locked out of my executive account?”

“It’s not just your account, Dante!” Julian stammered, papers rustling wildly in the background. “It’s everyone’s! At 4:00 a.m. New York time, a international legal firm representing Vale Global Holdings served freezing orders on all twenty-four operating accounts of Romano Group!”

Dante stood up from the sofa, knocking his glass over. Champagne spilled across the marble floor.

“Vale Global Holdings?” Dante growled into the phone. “What are you talking about? Vale Global is an offshore investment trust! We’ve used their credit lines for three years!”

“Dante... you don't understand,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking with terror. “Vale Global isn't an outside creditor. They own eighty-five percent of our voting shares. They hold the land titles to the Brooklyn docks, the Westchester estate, the Manhattan penthouse, and the corporate headquarters on Wall Street!”

Dante’s blood ran cold. “Who holds the controlling power of Vale Global?”

A long, agonizing silence filled the line.

“Julian!” Dante roared. “Who controls Vale Global?!”

“Serena,” Julian whispered. “Serena Vale. It’s her family’s private trust. It always has been.”
