Chapter 7 - The Morning After

At six o'clock the following morning, the sun rose over Chicago in a burst of brilliant, pale gold light. The blizzard had ended, leaving behind a world frozen in quiet white.

A sleek black town car sat idling near the front steps of the estate, its exhaust forming thick white plumes in the freezing morning air. Two drivers loaded several large leather suitcases into the trunk.

Inside the grand foyer, Arthur stood near the front doors, wrapped in a heavy wool overcoat, waiting in silent sadness.

Bianca stepped down the grand staircase slowly. She wore a plain black coat and dark sunglasses, her face pale and drawn. She looked ten years older than she had twenty-four hours ago. The haughty, invincible matriarch of the Duca family was gone, replaced by a defeated woman preparing for exile.

As she reached the bottom step, she stopped.

Roman and Hannah were standing near the archway leading to the dining hall.

Roman wore a dark turtleneck and trousers, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression unreadable. Beside him stood Hannah, wrapped in a thick cream-colored cashmere sweater and dark leggings. Her dark hair fell naturally over her shoulders, her skin glowing, completely at ease in her home.

Bianca looked at her son, hoping for a flicker of regret, a sign of hesitation. She found none. Roman stood like an iron wall beside his wife.

Bianca swallowed hard, her mouth dry. She turned her eyes toward Hannah.

For three agonizing seconds, no one spoke.

Then, Bianca did something no one in the history of the Duca family had ever seen her do.

She bowed her head.

"Thank you," Bianca whispered, her voice barely audible, choked with genuine shame. "For... for saving the foundation, Hannah."

Hannah looked at her mother-in-law for a long moment. She didn't accept the apology with grand theatrical forgiveness, nor did she reject it with bitterness. She simply gave a polite, dignified nod.

"Goodbye, Bianca," Hannah said softly.

Bianca closed her eyes, a single tear slipping beneath her dark sunglasses. She turned, pulled her coat tight around herself, and walked out the heavy front doors into the freezing morning air. Arthur followed her silently, shutting the oak doors behind them with a heavy, final thud.

The car drove away down the long, snow-covered driveway, its red taillights fading into the distance until it disappeared beyond the wrought-iron gates.

Roman let out a long breath, shifting his arm around Hannah’s shoulders and pulling her close against his side. "It's over."

May you like

"It's just the beginning, darling," Hannah corrected softly, looking up at him with a gentle smile. "We have an entire empire to reorganize today."

Roman laughed—a rich, booming sound that echoed through the vast, empty foyer. He leaned down and kissed her lips firmly. "Lead the way, Mrs. Duca."
