Chapter 4 - The Ticking Second Hand

The temperature in the drawing room felt as though it had plunged below zero.

Nicholas Vale took an instinctual step backward, his back hitting the mahogany bookshelves lining the wall. His breath came in shallow, panicked hitches. "This is a setup," he stammered, his voice cracking. "She’s a forensic accountant! She knows how to manipulate digital files! She’s framing me to save herself!"

"Nicholas," Roman spoke. The single word slammed into the room like an iron bar. "Shut up."

Roman pulled his phone from his pocket, pressed a button, and held it to his ear. "Paul," he commanded his head of security. "Go to the east wing guest suite. Retrieve Nicholas’s leather briefcase. Bring it here immediately. If it's locked, cut it open."

"Roman, you can't do that! That's illegal search!" Nicholas shrieked, losing every shred of his polished composure.

"In this house, Nicholas," Roman said coldly, "I am the law."

Bianca stood near the fireplace, her hands frozen mid-air. Her dark eyes darted frantically between Nicholas’s terrified face and Hannah’s serene, composed expression. A terrible, sickening realization was beginning to claw its way into her chest.

"Hannah," Bianca said, her voice shaking with an unfamiliar tremor. "Is... is this true?"

Hannah turned to her mother-in-law. There was no triumph in Hannah's eyes, no petty gloating. There was only the cold, unyielding weight of truth.

"You built that foundation twenty years ago, Bianca," Hannah said softly, her voice carrying across the silent room. "It was your legacy. You trusted Nicholas because he was family. You gave him master access to the clearing accounts because he smiled at your dinner parties and remembered your birthday."

Hannah paused, letting the words sink into the older woman's heart.

"You were so busy looking at my waistline, my background, and my lack of high-society manners," Hannah continued smoothly, "that you never bothered to check if the boy you raised was picking your pockets."

Bianca gasped, staggering back as if Hannah had physically struck her. She reached for Arthur’s arm, her face turning pale as ashes.

"I tried to tell you three weeks ago, Bianca," Hannah added. "I requested a private meeting with you in your office. Do you remember what you told me?"

Bianca swallowed hard, her mind flashing back to that afternoon three weeks ago. Hannah had walked into her sitting room with a blue folder, asking for twenty minutes of her time. Bianca had refused to look at her, waving her hand dismissively and telling Hannah that 'uneducated girls shouldn't pretend to understand high finance.'

"You told me I was a glorified clerk," Hannah reminded her gently. "You told me not to bother you with technical accounting details. So, I did what any good accountant does. I let the trap spring, caught the thief red-handed, and secured the money before he could bleed you dry."

At that moment, the heavy oak doors opened.

Paul, Roman’s massive, scar-faced head of security, stepped into the room. In his gloved hands, he carried a sleek, black leather briefcase. The steel latch had been freshly sheared off with heavy bolt cutters.

Paul walked over to Roman, setting the open briefcase on a low glass table in the center of the room.

"What's inside, Paul?" Roman asked, his voice deathly quiet.

Paul reached into the briefcase, pulling out a sleek silver laptop, three offshore bank access tokens, and a thick stack of printed wire transfer receipts stamped with the logo of the Cayman Islands National Bank.

Paul held up the top receipt. "Eight million dollars, Boss. Transferred three days ago from the Duca Charity Foundation to an entity called 'Vane Holdings Limited.' The sole officer listed on the shell corporation is Nicholas Vale."

A collective shout of outrage erupted from the family.

"You bastard!" Marcus Duca yelled, lunging toward his nephew. Two security guards instantly stepped in, holding Marcus back. "You stole from Bianca’s charity?! You brought shame on this entire family?!"

"Nicholas!" Arthur roared, his face turning purple with rage. "How could you?!"

Nicholas collapsed back against the bookshelf, sliding down until he was kneeling on the floor, his head in his hands. "I had to!" he sobbed hysterically. "They were going to kill me! The Macau syndicate... they said they’d put me in a cement barrel if I didn't pay by the end of the month! I was going to pay it back! I swear I was going to pay it back!"

"With what?" Hannah asked coldly, standing over him like a judge delivering sentence. "You’ve lost twelve million dollars in three years, Nicholas. You didn't just steal from the foundation. You stole from the construction payroll last year. You stole from the security division's pension fund in October. You were burning this family’s empire to the ground to pay for your addiction."

Nicholas looked up, his eyes bloodshot, streaming with tears. He looked at Roman, begging desperately. "Roman... please! We're blood! We're cousins! Don't let her do this to me!"

Roman looked down at his kneeling cousin with an expression of absolute disgust. He didn't see blood. He saw a rat that had tried to destroy his wife.

"You forged my wife's signature," Roman said, every word weighted with absolute lethality. "You allowed my mother to slap her in front of twenty-three people. You tried to ruin her life so you could escape to Switzerland."

Roman stepped closer, his shadow completely covering Nicholas.

"You are no longer family, Nicholas," Roman growled softly. "You are a debt. And tonight, you are going to pay it."

Roman turned to Paul. "Take him downstairs to the holding room. Lock him in. Call our legal team and tell them to draft a full asset forfeiture agreement. Nicholas will surrender every share of his stock, every property he owns, and every dime in his personal accounts to the foundation by morning."

"And if he refuses, Boss?" Paul asked grimly.

Roman’s eyes flickered with a terrifying, ancient coldness. "Then he goes for a drive to the docks."

Nicholas screamed and wept as Paul and two broad-shouldered guards dragged him out of the room, his fine shoes scraping uselessly against the hardwood floor until the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind him.

The drawing room fell into a dead, suffocating silence once again.

The clock on the mantel chimed ten times.

10:00 PM.

The two hours were up.

The truth was completely, undeniably exposed. The thief was gone. The money was safe.

And Hannah Duca stood in the center of the room, untouched, victorious, and completely unquestioned.

Slowly, every single eye in the room shifted toward Bianca Duca.

The matriarch of the family stood alone near the fireplace, trembling, her face drained of all color, staring at the woman she had struck two hours ago.
