Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Wolves

Downstairs in the main drawing room, the atmosphere was poisonous.

The twenty-three members of the Duca family had scattered across the velvet couches and leather armchairs, but nobody was relaxing. Security guards stood at every exit, their arms crossed, enforcing Roman’s lockdown. The doors leading to the snow-covered courtyard were locked tight.

Bianca sat near the grand marble fireplace, holding an ice pack against her trembling hand—not because she was hurt, but because the physical act of slapping Hannah had left her knuckles bruised. Arthur sat beside her, sipping scotch in silence, looking like a man waiting for a storm to tear his house apart.

Nicholas Vale stood by the tall, arched windows, clutching a crystal tumbler of whiskey. Sweat glistened faintly along his hairline, despite the cold draft seeping through the glass. He kept looking at his watch.

8:45 PM.

"This is an absolute farce," Nicholas muttered loudly enough for the room to hear. He turned toward the rest of the family, putting on an expression of deep concern. "Roman has lost his mind. He’s locking his own family in a room to protect an outsider who just stole eight million dollars from his own mother!"

"Watch your tongue, Nicholas," warned Marcus Duca, Roman’s uncle and a senior board member. "Roman is still the head of this family."

"For how long?" Nicholas countered, stepping toward the center of the room. "If Roman allows his wife to rob us blind without consequences, he isn't fit to lead the empire! We have protocols for embezzlement! If anyone else in this room took eight million dollars, they’d be sitting in a dark basement in South Chicago right now being questioned by Roman's lieutenants!"

A ripple of uneasy agreement passed through the younger cousins.

"He's right," whispered Julian, another cousin. "Roman is letting his feelings cloud his judgment. That woman has him completely wrapped around her finger."

Bianca lowered the ice pack, her face twisting into a bitter smile. "She’s a leech. I knew it the second he brought her home. She looked at our estate, our wealth, and our name like a dog staring at a steak. She thought she was clever. She thought she could slip eight million dollars out the back door while we were celebrating Christmas!"

"Aunt Bianca is right," Nicholas added smoothly, adjusting his cuff link again. "We need to call an emergency board meeting right now. We don't need to wait until ten o'clock. We have the wire transfer records! Her signature is on the file! We should vote to strip her of her family marital allowances and turn the evidence over to federal prosecutors!"

"No," Arthur finally spoke up, his voice raspy. "We wait for Roman. He gave us a deadline."

"Arthur, you're being weak!" Bianca snapped at her husband. "Look at what she did to me! She humiliated me in my own home! She made my son turn his gun on his own blood!"

"She didn't make Roman do anything," Arthur retorted quietly, looking his wife dead in the eye. "You slapped her, Bianca. In front of twenty people. You broke the rule. We don't strike family."

"She isn't family!" Bianca shouted, her voice echoing off the high wood-paneled ceiling. "She will never be family!"

At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors at the top of the grand staircase groaned open.

The room fell instant silent.

Every head turned toward the staircase.

Roman stepped out first. He had changed into a dark, immaculate suit, his shirt collar open, looking every bit the ruthless Don who ruled Chicago’s shadow economy. But he didn't descend the stairs immediately. He turned and extended his hand toward the doorway.

Hannah stepped out into the light.

She had not changed her dress. The dark emerald silk still hugged her voluptuous frame with proud, unbothered elegance. The red mark on her cheek had turned into a faint, violet shadow, but she wore it not like a mark of shame, but like a medal of war. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, flawless bun, exposing her long neck and steady, fearless eyes.

She placed her hand in Roman’s. Together, they walked down the grand marble staircase, side by side, perfectly synchronized.

Nicholas felt a sudden, sharp prick of ice hit the bottom of his stomach. Hannah wasn't walking like a woman about to be executed. She was walking like a queen descending to inspect her troops.

They reached the floor of the drawing room. The family parted like the Red Sea as Roman and Hannah moved toward the center of the space.

Roman stopped near the grand fireplace, resting one hand casually in his suit pocket, while his other hand remained firmly anchored around Hannah’s waist, pulling her flush against his side.

"It is nine fifteen," Roman announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the room. "We have forty-five minutes remaining."

"Why wait?" Nicholas stepped forward, trying to sound bold, though his hands were clenched tightly inside his pockets. "Roman, the evidence is already clear. Her signature is on the wire transfer! You’re putting the entire family through this circus just to give her time to invent an excuse!"

Hannah turned her head slowly, fixing her gaze directly on Nicholas. A tiny, terrifyingly calm smile touched her lips.

"You seem very anxious for this night to end, Nicholas," Hannah said, her voice smooth and clear.

"I’m anxious for justice, Hannah!" Nicholas snapped, trying to project righteous anger. "You stole eight million dollars from Aunt Bianca’s charity! Children’s hospitals are losing funding tonight because of you!"

"Is that why you're nervous, Nicholas?" Hannah asked softly, taking a step toward him. Roman stayed right beside her, an imposing shadow of pure muscle and threat. "You're worried about the children's hospitals?"

"Of course I am!"

"That's funny," Hannah continued, reaching into a small leather folder she carried under her arm. "Because according to the foundation’s secondary ledgers, you haven't visited a children's hospital in four years. But you have visited Macau three times in the last six months."

Nicholas froze. The color instantly drained from his face. "What... what are you talking about? My business trips to Asia are approved by the board!"

"Yes," Hannah agreed smoothly, pulling out a sheet of paper. "Your business trips were approved. But the four million dollars you withdrew from the Duca Logistics vault in Hong Kong to cover your losses at the Venetian Casino... that wasn't approved, was it?"

A shocked gasp rippled through the room.

"She’s lying!" Nicholas yelled, turning frantically to the family. "She’s making up absurd stories to deflect from her own crime! Roman, are you going to let her slander your own cousin?!"

Roman didn't move an inch. His eyes were locked onto Nicholas with the cold, hungry intensity of an apex predator. "Let her speak."

"Thank you, darling," Hannah said softly to Roman. She turned back to Nicholas, her voice dropping into the icy, precise tone of an executioner delivering a verdict.

"In thirty minutes," Hannah revealed, "the independent verification report from the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority will hit my terminal upstairs. That report will contain the decrypted IP logs for the forged authorization code used to move the eight million dollars."

She took another step closer to Nicholas, her eyes locked onto his terrified face.

"And do you know what those logs will show, Nicholas?" she whispered softly. "They will show that the secondary digital signature was forged using a private encryption key located on a laptop currently sitting inside your briefcase in the upstairs guest bedroom."

The silence in the drawing room was absolute.

Nicholas looked around frantically, searching for a single friendly face. But as the family members looked at his trembling hands, his pale skin, and the cold sweat pouring down his neck, the truth began to hit them like a freight train.
