Chapter 6 - The Awakening

Three days later, the intensive care unit on the fourth floor of Wakefield Regional Medical Center was quiet except for the rhythmic, soothing hum of medical equipment.

Claire Mercer slowly opened her eyes.

The ceiling was white. The light was soft, filtered through sheer window blinds.

She felt a dull, heavy ache in her abdomen and a deep tightness in her chest, but the suffocating darkness that had pulled her under three days ago was gone.

"Claire?"

A soft, warm hand squeezed her fingers.

Claire turned her head slowly. Her sister, Sarah, was sitting in a chair beside the bed, her eyes red-rimmed with tears, but a radiant, relieved smile breaking across her face.

"Sarah..." Claire’s voice was a low, scratchy whisper.

"Don't try to talk too much, sweetie," Sarah said gently, leaning over to kiss Claire’s forehead. "You're safe. You're in the ICU."

Claire’s breath caught in her throat as memory came rushing back like a freezing wave—the screaming monitors, the blood, the cold iron base of the iron, the window...

"My babies," Claire choked out, tears instantly welling in her eyes. "Sarah... my boys... are they..."

"They’re alive, Claire," Sarah said instantly, her voice filled with deep emotion. "They’re in the NICU downstairs. They're small—Ethan is three pounds eleven ounces, and Liam is three pounds eight ounces—but they are strong. Dr. Brooks says their lungs are performing amazingly well. You can see them as soon as you're stable enough to be moved."

Claire closed her eyes, a long, trembling sob escaping her chest. Alive. Her little boys were alive.

She took a slow, painful breath, settling her heart rate, before opening her eyes again to look at her sister.

"Daniel," Claire whispered.

Sarah’s expression hardened into a protective wall of stone.

"Daniel is in the Central North Carolina Detention Center," Sarah said flatly. "He and Vanessa Hale were both arrested the night you were brought into surgery."

Claire stared at her sister, her memory returning to that final awful moment before the darkness claimed her.

"I saw her," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "Outside the window. She was... she was laughing, Sarah."

"I know," Sarah said softly, taking Claire’s hand in both of hers. "We have the security footage, Claire. She laughed while the doctors were performing CPR on you. But she isn't laughing anymore. The DA has charged both of them with attempted first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and spousal endangerment. Neither of them is getting out on bail."

Claire looked down at her own hand—the hand that had lifted toward the glass, begging her husband to come to her.

Her gold wedding ring was missing, removed by the surgical staff before her emergency operation. Her skin was bare, clean, free of the gold band that had tied her to a man who had left her to die.

"He took the money, didn't he?" Claire asked quietly.

"He tried to," Sarah replied. "He transferred almost two million to Vanessa’s shell company. But because of the emergency trust revisions we filed three weeks ago, the bank flagged the wire. Every single cent of your grandfather's money has been frozen and returned to your sole estate. Daniel’s software company has been placed into court-ordered receivership."

Claire turned her face toward the window. Outside, the sun was breaking through the morning clouds, casting warm, golden light across the room.

For months, she had felt weak, terrified, trapped in a body that was failing her while her marriage crumbled around her. She had blamed herself for Daniel’s distance. She had tried so hard to be the patient, understanding wife while he drifted away.

Now, looking at the bright sunlight, the fog in her mind cleared completely.

"I want to see my sons, Sarah," Claire said, her voice growing stronger, firmer than it had been in months. "Bring me a wheelchair. I’m done lying in this bed."
