Chapter 3 - The Cold Truth

Daniel felt as though the floor beneath his feet had split open, dropping him into an abyss of cold, dark nothingness.
"Died?" he stammered, his breath coming in ragged, desperate hitches. "No. No, no, no... Elena, please! Try again! Use the paddles! Do something! She can't be dead! Claire!"
He lunged toward the swinging doors, but two burly hospital security guards—who had quietly stepped into the hallway behind Dr. Brooks—immediately blocked his path, grabbing his arms and holding him back.
"Let me go!" Daniel screamed, tears finally spilling over his face. "Claire! Claire, I’m sorry! Claire!"
Behind him, Vanessa took a slow, quiet step back. The shocked look had faded from her eyes, replaced by a calculating, cold light. She adjusted the lapel of her cream coat, her mind already racing through the logistics of the situation. Claire is dead. The twins are dead. Daniel is the sole heir to her family's trust estate and the suburban house.
Vanessa stepped forward, trying to project the image of a supportive, grieving friend.
"Dr. Brooks," Vanessa said smoothly, her tone laced with fake solemnity. "This is obviously a tragic outcome. We appreciate everything the hospital attempted to do. We’ll need the paperwork for the release of the body and the estate notifications."
Dr. Brooks turned her head slowly to look at Vanessa.
The look in the doctor's eyes was so intensely lethal that even Vanessa paused, her smooth composure faltering for a fraction of a second.
"You," Dr. Brooks said softly. "The woman who stood outside a window laughing while a mother bled out."
"I told you, I was in shock—" Vanessa began, her chin lifting defensively.
"Save it," Dr. Brooks interrupted, her voice cutting through the corridor like a scalpel. "I know who you are, Ms. Hale. And I know what you’ve been doing for the last six months."
Daniel stopped struggling against the guards, his chest heaving as he stared at the doctor. "Elena... what are you talking about? Where are my babies? Where are my sons?"
Dr. Brooks looked directly into Daniel’s eyes, her expression unyielding.
"The twins are currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," Dr. Brooks stated flatly. "They were successfully delivered via emergency hysterectomy five minutes ago. They are critical, but they are breathing."
Daniel gasped, a tiny ray of hope breaking through his despair. "They’re alive? My boys are alive? Thank God... oh, thank God! Can I see them? Can I see my wife's body?"
"No," Dr. Brooks said.
The word was simple. Final. Absolute.
Daniel blinked, confused. "What do you mean, no? I’m their father! I’m Claire’s legal husband!"
Dr. Brooks reached into the pocket of her blood-stained scrubs and pulled out a heavy, sealed manila envelope. She didn't offer it to Daniel. Instead, she tapped it against her palm.
"Two weeks ago," Dr. Brooks said, her voice loud enough to echo down the polished hallway, "Claire came to my private office. She was sick, Daniel. Not just from the twin pregnancy, but from the physical and emotional stress of knowing that her husband was systematically draining her personal inheritance to fund his failing company and his mistress’s apartment lease."
Daniel’s face drained of what little color remained. "I... I was investing that money into the business—"
"Claire wasn't stupid, Daniel," Dr. Brooks continued mercilessly. "She knew about the hotel charges. She knew about the vehicle leases. She knew about the offshore transfer attempts you made last month using her forged signature."
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Forged signature? Daniel, what is she talking about?"
Daniel couldn't answer. He couldn't speak.
"Claire knew her pregnancy was dangerous," Dr. Brooks said, her eyes fixed entirely on Daniel. "She knew there was a high probability she wouldn't survive the delivery. So, while you were in Miami three weeks ago with Ms. Hale under the pretense of a 'software conference,' Claire met with her family’s senior estate attorney and the board of ethics at this hospital."
Dr. Brooks unsealed the envelope and pulled out a legal document bearing the official seal of the Wake County Superior Court and the hospital's legal board.
"Claire signed a full Medical Power of Attorney and an emergency revision of her Living Trust," Dr. Brooks announced clearly. "She revoked all of your decision-making rights as her spouse. She designated me—her physician—and her sister, Sarah Mercer, as the sole legal guardians of her children and the executors of her estate in the event of her death."
"That's not legal!" Vanessa snapped out, stepping forward aggressively. "A husband is the automatic legal proxy! A doctor can't take guardianship of a patient's children! This is a massive violation of hospital policy!"
Dr. Brooks finally looked at Vanessa, a small, dark smile touching the corners of her lips.
"It is entirely legal when the husband is under active criminal investigation for corporate fraud and spousal endangerment, Ms. Hale," Dr. Brooks said calmly. "The state police were notified three days ago. And as for Claire's body..."
Dr. Brooks took a step back toward the doors of the delivery room.
"Claire Mercer died on that table for four minutes," Dr. Brooks said softly. "Her heart flatlined. Her brain was deprived of oxygen. By every medical metric, she was dead."

Daniel fell to his knees on the linoleum floor, the security guards finally letting go of his arms as he wept into his hands.
"She died," Dr. Brooks repeated, her voice turning to ice. "And while she was dead, her legal status as your wife vanished. But three minutes after her heart stopped... we brought her back."
