Chapter 4 - The Resurrection

The corridor fell so silent that the hum of the fluorescent lights sounded like a roar.

Daniel lifted his face from his hands, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with a wild, incoherent shock.

"What... what did you say?" Daniel whispered.

Vanessa froze, her immaculate posture suddenly rigid.

"We brought her back, Daniel," Dr. Brooks said, her tone devoid of warmth. "It took two rounds of epinephrine, three shocks from the defibrillator, and an immediate blood transfusion directly into her central line. Her heart started beating again at 1:21 AM."

Daniel stood up on shaky legs, a ragged laugh bursting from his chest. "She’s alive? Claire is alive? Oh, thank God! Thank God! Elena, let me see her! Let me tell her—"

"You will not lay eyes on her," Dr. Brooks cut him off coldly. "Claire is currently in the ICU, unconscious, intubated, and under twenty-four-hour police protection."

"Police protection?" Vanessa interjected, her voice sharp with sudden, panicked agitation. "On what grounds? This is a private family matter!"

"On the grounds that Claire submitted audio recordings to the District Attorney’s office yesterday afternoon," Dr. Brooks stated, looking directly at Vanessa. "Recordings of you and Daniel discussing how to alter her prescription medication to induce early labor while she was on bed rest."

Vanessa’s face went completely chalk-white. The confident, ruthless composure she had worn like armor cracked wide open.

"That’s a lie!" Vanessa screeched, her voice losing its polished tone. "That’s a complete fabrication! Daniel, tell her!"

Daniel stared at Vanessa, his mind spinning out of control.

Two weeks ago, when Claire’s blood pressure had spiked dangerously, Vanessa had handed him a bottle of herbal supplements, claiming they were specialized vitamins her own uncle—a holistic doctor—recommended for high-risk pregnancies. Vanessa had insisted that Daniel slip them into Claire’s nightly tea to "help her relax."

“She’s so tense, Daniel,” Vanessa had whispered back then, her hand rubbing his neck. “If she takes these, she’ll sleep better. It will take the pressure off both of you.”

Daniel had done it. He had put the pills in Claire's tea for four days straight until Claire had caught him shaking the powder into her cup and quietly saved the mug for lab analysis.

"You..." Daniel breathed, turning to stare at Vanessa as if looking into the face of a demon. "You told me they were vitamins."

"They were vitamins!" Vanessa snapped, her voice trembling now. "Daniel, don't listen to this doctor! She’s setting us up! She's trying to ruin your company!"

"The lab results came back four hours ago, Daniel," Dr. Brooks said smoothly, folding her arms over her chest. "The powder contained high doses of syntocinon derivatives—a potent labor-inducing agent. You were poisoning your pregnant wife to force a premature delivery."

"No!" Daniel sobbed, dropping to his knees again, clawing at his hair. "No! I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know!"

"Ignorance is not a legal defense for attempted murder and double feticide," Dr. Brooks said coldly.

At that moment, the heavy double doors at the end of the main hallway swung open.

Four uniformed Raleigh Police officers walked briskly down the corridor, their heavy boots thudding against the floor. Beside them walked Sarah Mercer—Claire’s older sister.

Sarah was thirty-two, a corporate litigation attorney with sharp blue eyes and dark hair pulled back in a tight bun. She was wearing a trench coat, her face pale with grief and absolute, burning fury.

Sarah didn't even glance at Daniel groveling on the floor. She walked straight up to Vanessa Hale.

Before Vanessa could react, Sarah’s right hand flew out, delivering a crackingly loud, open-handed slap across Vanessa’s face.

The force of the blow snapped Vanessa’s head to the side, knocking her back against the wall. Vanessa gasped, holding her reddening cheek, her eyes wide with shock.

"How dare you—" Vanessa began.

"Shut your mouth," Sarah spat, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. "You were seen on hospital security cameras three minutes ago laughing outside my sister's delivery room while she was flatlining. That video is already secured as evidence of intent."

Sarah turned her icy gaze down to Daniel.

"And you," Sarah said, looking at her brother-in-law as if he were something she had stepped on. "The police have a warrant for your arrest, Daniel. For corporate embezzlement, grand larceny, and attempted murder of your wife and unborn children."

One of the police officers stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Daniel Mercer, Vanessa Hale," the officer announced sternly. "You both have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As the cold steel cuffs clicked around Daniel’s wrists, he looked up through his tears toward the delivery suite doors.

Behind the glass, he could see the distant, flickering screens of the ICU monitors keeping his wife and twin sons alive.

He had wanted freedom. He had wanted to escape the weight of responsibility.

Now, as the officers hauled him to his feet, Daniel realized that his freedom was gone forever—and the woman he had betrayed was the only one who had survived.
