Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The fallout from Courtroom 402 was swift, brutal, and public.
By late afternoon, headlines across the state financial and news outlets read: HOWARD ENTERPRISE HEIR DENIED CUSTODY AMID FEDERAL FRAUD AND ASSAULT INVESTIGATION.
In the mahogany-paneled boardroom of Howard Enterprise, twelve senior board members sat around the massive oval table in heavy, stony silence.
Daniel Howard sat at the far end, his tie loosened, his eyes hollow. His mother sat beside him, looking frail and defeated for the first time in her life.
At the head of the table stood Marcus Vance—no relation to Eleanor Vance, but the chairman of the board and the largest non-family shareholder in the corporation.
"The bank has canceled our credit line, Daniel," Marcus said, setting a thick stack of financial termination letters onto the wood. "The news of the IRS audit into the foundation has triggered the default clause on our twenty-million-dollar construction bond for the harbor project."
"We can restructure," Daniel said, his voice raspy. "We have assets in the Greenwich estate—"
"The Greenwich estate has three federal tax liens attached to it as of two hours ago," Marcus interrupted coldly. "Your mother's offshore accounts in the Caymans have been frozen by federal order."
Margaret gasped, clutching her chest. "They can't freeze my private accounts! That was my late husband's money!"
"It was money funneled through a tax-exempt charity to pay off doctors, contractors, and corporate auditors, Margaret," Marcus said with absolute disgust. "The board has just completed an emergency vote."
Daniel looked up, a cold knot tightening in his stomach. "A vote?"
"By a unanimous decision of eleven to zero," Marcus announced, "you are hereby removed from your position as Chief Executive Officer of Howard Enterprise. Effective immediately."
"You can't do that!" Daniel stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor. "My family built this company! My name is on the building!"
"And your name is currently dragging this company into bankruptcy and federal prison!" Marcus barked back. "Security is waiting downstairs to escort you and your mother from the premises. You have one hour to clear your personal belongings from your office."
As Daniel stood frozen in the middle of the boardroom, his phone buzzed repeatedly on the table.
He looked down at the screen.
It was a text message from his criminal defense attorney:
Vanessa Cole just entered a formal guilty plea for second-degree assault. She has agreed to turn state's evidence and testify against your mother regarding the conspiracy to frame Elena. Federal marshals are en route to your house.
Daniel dropped his phone onto the table. The screen cracked across the center, splitting the notification in two.
He turned to look at his mother. Margaret was staring blankly at the wall, her hands trembling uncontrollably, tears finally spilling over her wrinkled, makeup-caked cheeks.
The grand dynasty they had spent decades building—the prestige, the social status, the absolute control over everyone who entered their world—had collapsed in less than a week.

And it hadn't been destroyed by a rival corporation or a hostile market takeover.
It had been brought down by the quiet, pregnant woman they had tried to push down the stairs.
