Chapter 10 - The Safe Home

The summer sun was setting over the coastal bay, casting brilliant ribbons of gold, purple, and orange across the quiet water.
The Victorian house on the hill was bathed in warm light. On the broad wooden porch, a light breeze blew through the white lace curtains of the open living room windows.
Elena sat in the oak rocking chair, holding Leo against her shoulder as he softly drifted off to sleep, his breath rising and falling in a deep, peaceful rhythm.
Standing at the porch railing, looking out over the glowing water, was Mateo. He had long since traded his formal trench coat for a simple linen shirt, his posture relaxed, his dark eyes filled with quiet contentment.
He turned around, walking over to stand beside her chair. He reached down and gently adjusted the light blanket over Leo's back.
"He's fast asleep," Mateo whispered softly.
"He had a big day," Elena said, looking up at him with a tender smile. "He spent two hours chasing the neighbor's golden retriever in the yard."
Mateo sat down on the wooden bench beside her rocking chair, resting his arm along the backrest. "It's hard to believe it's been nearly a year since that call came through my earpiece."
"I was so terrified that night, Mateo," Elena admitted quietly, her eyes drifting back to the sunset. "Standing at the top of those stairs, knowing that no one in that house cared if I lived or died. I thought I was completely alone."
Mateo reached out, his hand gently covering hers as it rested on the arm of the chair. His fingers were warm, strong, and steady—a anchor that had never once slipped.
"You were never alone, Elena," Mateo said softly. "And you never will be again."
Elena leaned her head sideways, resting it lightly against his shoulder. The cool ocean breeze swept across the porch, carrying the sweet scent of blooming hydrangeas and salt water.
Inside the house, there were no dark shadows, no hidden secrets, no icy silence waiting behind closed doors.

There was only warmth, light, and the enduring strength of a home built on truth, courage, and love.
Elena closed her eyes, holding her son tight against her heart, and listened to the peaceful, steady rhythm of the tide rolling in.
