Chapter 9 - THE UNWRITTEN LIFE

A year after the non-wedding, I was sitting in a corner booth of a quiet bistro in downtown Chicago, having dinner with my family and friends.
My parents were there, laughing over glasses of Pinot Noir. My brother David was showing Sarah photos from his recent hiking trip in Colorado. Marcus Vance was sitting beside me, enjoying a plate of fresh seafood pasta.
My career had flourished over the past twelve months. I had been promoted to Vice President of Technology Architecture at my firm, leading a team of forty brilliant engineers across two continents. My investment portfolio had grown, my Lincoln Park condo was completely renovated, and my life was filled with quiet, absolute peace.
As the dinner ended, my father raised his wine glass, tapping it gently with his knife.
“Attention, everyone,” Dad said, his eyes crinkling with proud, happy warmth. “I want to propose a toast to my daughter, Maya.”
Everyone at the table stopped talking, lifting their glasses toward me.
“One year ago,” Dad said, his voice deep and steady, “Maya walked out of a ballroom because she recognized that love without respect is just a transaction. She had the courage to say no when every pressure in the world was telling her to say yes.”
He looked into my eyes with a love that made my throat tighten with emotion.
“To Maya,” Dad said. “The architect of her own life.”
“To Maya!” everyone echoed, clinking their glasses together.
I smiled, taking a sip of my wine, looking around the table at the people who actually loved me—people who didn't view me as a line-item asset, who didn't want to control my money, and who celebrated my independence every single day.
After dinner, I walked home alone along the illuminated path of Lincoln Park.
The cool evening breeze carried the scent of fresh rain and blooming lilac trees. The city lights reflected off the calm waters of the lake, bright, endless, and full of possibility.
I pulled my phone from my pocket, opened my banking app out of pure habit, and looked at my balance.
It was my money.
Earned by my mind.
May you like
Protected by my courage.
Owned by no one else on earth.
