Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

The board meeting was a total triumph.

Lily stood at the front of the massive executive boardroom, presenting her recalibrated supply chain model to twenty senior board members and Vincent Moretti himself. Her delivery was crisp, calm, and flawless. When she finished, even the most skeptical old-guard directors nodded in enthusiastic approval.

As the meeting adjourned and the board members filed out of the room, Vincent walked over to Lily’s podium, resting his hands on his ebony walking stick.

“Incredible work, Miss Bennett,” Vincent said, his deep voice filled with rare, genuine warmth. “You have saved this firm a significant fortune today.”

“Thank you, Mr. Moretti,” Lily said, packing her tablet into her leather briefcase.

“Vincent,” the old man corrected her gently, a soft glimmer in his eyes. “You are no longer an outsider here, Lily. You are family.”

Lily felt a surge of deep warmth spread through her chest. Family was a word that had carried fear and pain for six years. Hearing it used with genuine respect felt like a long-overdue healing.

Julian walked up beside them, sliding his hands into his suit pockets. “I told you she was the sharpest mind in the state, Father.”

“You did, my boy,” Vincent smiled. “Which is why I want both of you at the estate tonight. We are celebrating the acquisition approval.”

At seven o'clock that evening, Lily arrived at the Moretti estate in Buckhead. She wore an elegant emerald-green silk dress that complemented her dark hair, carrying herself with an effortless, graceful confidence that commanded respect.

As she walked through the grand foyer toward the private garden terrace, she heard soft voices coming from Vincent’s private library.

The heavy oak door was cracked open two inches.

“...she’s getting too close to Julian, Vincent,” a woman’s sharp, haughty voice was saying.

Lily paused near the corridor wall, her instincts instantly going on high alert.

She recognized the voice. It belonged to Eleanor Vance, Marcus Vance’s wealthy elder sister and a prominent shareholder in Moretti Continental, who had long pushed for her own daughter, Victoria, to marry Julian.

“Lily Bennett is an exceptional young woman, Eleanor,” Vincent’s calm voice replied from inside the room.

“She’s a girl with a ruined family name!” Eleanor argued bitterly. “Her aunt is currently sitting in a federal prison! Her father’s estate was entangled with loan sharks! Do you really want a girl with that kind of trash background sitting beside Julian when he takes over the chairmanship?”

Lily stood frozen in the quiet hallway, feeling a cold, familiar prickle of anxiety touch her spine. No matter how much money she recovered, no matter how brilliant her academic papers were, there would always be people who looked at her and saw the girl from the basement.

Inside the library, a low, dangerous voice suddenly cut through the air.

“That’s enough, Eleanor.”

Julian stepped out from behind his father’s heavy mahogany desk, his dark eyes burning with immediate, absolute fury.

“Julian, darling—” Eleanor began, adjusting her pearls.

“If you ever speak about Lily Bennett in that tone again,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and cold it sent a chill through the quiet room, “I will personally freeze every investment asset your family holds in Moretti Continental.”

Eleanor went pale. “Julian! We have been family friends for twenty years!”

“Then start acting like it,” Julian growled, stepping straight up to the older woman. “Lily Bennett has more intellect, integrity, and courage in her small finger than your daughter has in her entire body. She survived horrors that would have broken you in a day. And she did it while building a career that saved this company millions.”

He leaned down, his voice echoing off the high ceiling. “She is not a girl with a ruined name, Eleanor. She is the woman I love. And if you disrespect her again, you will never set foot in this house while I breathe.”

Outside the door, Lily pressed her hand against her chest, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Tears of overwhelming emotion filled her eyes.

The woman I love.

He had said it. Plainly, fiercely, without a single shred of doubt.
