Chapter 6 - The King's Table

That evening, the grand dining room of the Moretti estate in Buckhead was bathed in the warm, ambient glow of crystal chandeliers.

The estate was a fortress—a sprawling thirty-acre compound protected by high stone walls, wrought-iron gates, and armed security personnel who moved silently through the manicured gardens.

Lily sat at the long mahogany dining table across from Julian. Vincent Moretti sat at the head of the table, sipping a glass of vintage red wine.

A team of private chefs served a four-course dinner, but Lily barely touched her plate. The surreal reality of the last twenty-four hours was still settling into her mind.

“You’re quiet, Lily,” Julian noted softly, cutting his steak with precise, practiced grace.

“I’m waiting to wake up,” Lily admitted, looking at the silver cutlery in her hand. “Yesterday morning I was washing dishes in a house where I wasn't wanted. Tonight I’m sitting in the most secure mansion in Georgia.”

Vincent set his wineglass down with a light clink. “Power is an extraordinary illusion, Miss Bennett. People like your aunt believe that money gives them power. They are mistaken. True power is the ability to protect what is yours and eliminate threats before they reach your doorstep.”

“What will happen to Victor Vane?” Lily asked quietly.

Vincent’s dark eyes met hers with cool, unblinking intensity. “Mr. Vane will spend the remainder of his natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary in Colorado. His organization has been completely dismantled. He will never bother anyone again.”

Lily let out a slow, quiet breath. The invisible weight that had been pressing down on her chest for six long years finally seemed to dissolve completely.

“And what about your future, Lily?” Julian asked, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the white tablecloth. His dark eyes fixed on her face with intense interest. “The Moretti Foundation Fellowship selection committee meets on Monday morning. Your application is sitting at the top of the stack.”

Lily looked down at her lap. “I don't need charity, Julian.”

“It’s not charity,” Julian said firmly, his tone laced with absolute conviction. “I reviewed your predictive economic modeling paper on regional shipping logistics last night. It’s brilliant, Lily. It’s better than the work my senior analysts produced last quarter.”

Vincent nodded in agreement. “My son does not offer praise easily, Miss Bennett. You have a rare mind. It would be a crime to waste it working as a junior clerk somewhere when you could be building something extraordinary.”

“What are you offering?” Lily asked softly.

“A full research position at Moretti Continental,” Julian revealed smoothly. “You complete your master’s degree at Bellweather fully funded by the foundation. In exchange, you spend twenty hours a week working directly under my supervision in our strategic development division.”

Lily looked at Julian. The dangerous, ruthless heir who had pulled her out of a muddy ditch in the pouring rain was looking at her not as a victim, not as a helpless girl from a basement, but as an absolute equal.

“Working directly under you?” Lily asked, a tiny, teasing smile finally appearing at the corner of her lips. “That sounds slightly exhausting, Mr. Moretti.”

Julian smiled back—a warm, genuine smile that transformed his intimidating face completely. “I assure you, Miss Bennett, I am a very demanding boss.”
