Chapter 5 - THE MOTEL IN ROOM 114

The Extended Stay Inn sat alongside Interstate 85, framed by the roaring noise of eighteen-wheelers and the harsh, flickering purple glow of a neon sign.
Inside Room 114, the air smelled of stale tobacco and industrial disinfectant. The carpet was stained, the wallpaper peeling at the corners, and the single window looked out onto a trash dumpster.
Barbara sat on the edge of the saggy queen-sized bed, wearing a cheap trench coat over her clothes, staring vacantly at the wall. The ice pack was gone, revealing a deep, ugly yellow-and-purple bruise stretching across her jawline.
Evan sat at the small laminate table, surrounded by six mobile phones he had purchased at a prepaid kiosk down the street. He was frantically dialing numbers, holding the phone to his ear with trembling hands.
"Mark, it's Evan," he pleaded into the receiver. "Look, man, I just need a temporary short-term loan. Fifty grand. Just enough to retainer a decent defense attorney... Mark? Mark?"
The line went dead.
Evan slammed the prepaid phone against the table, shattering its cheap plastic casing. "Coward! Traitor! I gave that bastard three commercial leases last year!"
Kelsey lay on the second bed, curling her body into a ball, weeping softly. She was still wearing her white maternity dress, which was now wrinkled and stained around the hem.
"I want to go home, Evan," Kelsey sobbed. "My back hurts. The bed is hard, and there’s no hot water in the bathroom."
"We don't have a home, Kelsey!" Evan shouted, turning on her with wild, bloodshot eyes. "Don't you get it? She took everything! The house, the cars, the accounts, the firm! She stripped me bare!"
"You told me she was stupid!" Kelsey screamed back, sitting up, her hands clutching her bump. "You told me she was an emotional wreck who didn't know anything about money! You told me she would give you half the estate just to get rid of you!"
"She lied to me!" Evan roared, pacing the small room like a caged animal. "She acted like a pathetic, grieving widow for ten years! She let me handle the books! She set me up!"
"She didn't set you up, you idiot!" Barbara spoke up suddenly, her voice raspy and bitter from the corner of the room.
Evan stopped pacing, looking at his mother.
Barbara slowly turned her bruised head toward her son, her eyes burning with a dark, terrible clarity. "She didn't set you up, Evan. She watched you. She let you steal until the pile was big enough to hand to the federal prosecutor. She played you like a cheap fiddle, and you were too busy buying boats for that tramp to notice!"
"Don't call me a tramp!" Kelsey yelled at Barbara.
"You are a tramp!" Barbara spat back, standing up from the bed, her voice rising into a shrieking crescendo. "You ruined my family! You seduced my son, tricked him into throwing away a fifty-million-dollar heiress, and brought your bastard child into our lives!"
"It's not a bastard!" Kelsey shrieked. "He's Evan's son!"
"Is he?" a new voice asked from the open doorway.
Everyone froze.
Standing in the doorway of Room 114 was a young man wearing a grey gym hoodie and sweatpants. He was broad-shouldered, muscular, with a brassy, confident posture.
It was Tyler—Kelsey’s personal trainer.
Kelsey’s face drained of every drop of color. "Tyler? What... what are you doing here?"
Tyler leaned against the doorframe, holding a small white envelope in his hand. "Your sister told me you were staying here. I came to deliver this in person."
Evan stared at the intruder, his jaw working in confusion. "Who the hell are you?"
Tyler ignored Evan completely, walking over to the bed and dropping the envelope onto Kelsey’s lap.
"Paternity test results," Tyler said smoothly. "I had my uncle at the clinic rush the DNA panel we did two weeks ago."
Kelsey reached for the envelope with shaking hands, but Evan lunged forward, snatching it off her lap and tearing it open.
He scanned the legal page inside.
At the bottom of the document, printed in bold black ink, was the final statistical calculation: PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.98% — FATHER: TYLER R. MENDOZA.
Evan’s hands began to shake violently. The paper slipped from his fingers, fluttering down onto the stained carpet like a dead leaf.
He looked at Kelsey. "It... it isn't mine?"
Kelsey buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.
Tyler let out a dry, amused laugh. "Of course it isn't yours, old man. You had a vasectomy five years ago. Did you really think you were a medical miracle?"
Evan staggered backward, his knees hitting the laminate table, knocking over his remaining prepaid phones. The absolute, crushing weight of his ultimate stupidity hit him like a physical blow. He had given up his empire, his marriage, his reputation, and his freedom for a woman who had used him as a financial mark for another man's child.
Tyler picked up Kelsey’s designer bag from the chair, pulled out her gold jewelry, and tossed the empty bag back onto the bed. "Come on, Kelsey. We're going. I'm not letting my kid grow up in a cheap motel with a broke ex-con."

Kelsey didn't argue. She stood up, wiped her face, and walked toward the door without looking back at Evan once.
Evan collapsed into the plastic chair, staring at the floor as the door clicked shut behind them, leaving him alone in the dim motel room with his bruised, hysterical mother.
