Chapter 3 - THE EVICTION NOTICE

At seven o'clock the following morning, the winter fog hung heavy over the gated enclave of Willow Oaks—the affluent neighborhood where Evan’s mother, Barbara, owned a four-thousand-square-foot Georgian manor.

Barbara sat in her sunroom, wearing a silk robe, a thick layer of ice packs pressed against her bruised left cheek. Her face was still swollen from the two slaps I had delivered at the courthouse, but her pride was far more damaged than her flesh.

Evan paced across the Persian rug, his hair uncombed, his expensive suit rumpled, his eyes bloodshot from a night spent without sleep. Kelsey sat on the sofa, weeping softly into a linen napkin.

"What do you mean the accounts are locked?" Barbara snapped, her voice muffled by the ice pack. "Call the bank manager, Evan! You've known Arthur for fifteen years! He golfs with your uncle!"

"I called him!" Evan shouted, slamming his fist onto a side table, causing a porcelain teacup to rattle violently. "Arthur wouldn't even come to the phone! His assistant said the accounts were frozen by order of the Federal District Court under a civil RICO warrant!"

Kelsey looked up, her mascara smudged down her cheeks. "Evan, you told me you had thirty million dollars! You told me we were moving to the estate in Savannah after the final decree was signed!"

"Shut up, Kelsey!" Evan roared, turning on her. "Just shut the hell up! I'm trying to think!"

"Don't you dare speak to her like that!" Barbara interjected, rising from her chair. "She is carrying my grandchild! The only legitimate heir to this family!"

Before Evan could reply, the heavy iron gates at the end of the driveway hummed loudly, swinging open.

Three dark blue utility vans, accompanied by a county sheriff’s cruiser, pulled slowly up the circular brick drive.

Barbara frowned, lowering her ice pack. "Who on earth is that at this hour?"

Evan walked nervously to the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, watching as four men in dark uniforms stepped out of the vans, carrying clipboards, industrial tape, and heavy locksmith tools.

The front doorbell rang—a loud, demanding chime that echoed through the marble foyer.

Evan pulled the heavy oak door open. Standing on the porch was Deputy Sheriff Miller, accompanied by Marcus Vance and two junior associates from my legal team.

"Evan Vance?" Deputy Miller asked, checking his clipboard.

"Yes," Evan said, trying to adjust his posture into something resembling authority. "What is the meaning of this? This is private property."

"It was private property," Marcus Vance stepped forward smoothly, pulling a certified court order from his leather briefcase. "As of 12:01 AM this morning, the deed for 142 Willow Oaks Way was transferred to the Sterling Asset Management Trust pursuant to the judgment of the Chancery Court."

Barbara rushed into the foyer, her silk robe billowing behind her. "This is my house! I bought this house twenty years ago!"

"Correction, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, his voice ice-cold and professional. "Your late husband purchased this house using a mortgage underwritten by Sterling Development. Over the last eight years, your son used funds embezzled from my client’s estate to pay off the primary mortgage note. Under federal asset forfeiture guidelines, the property has been seized to satisfy the civil fraud judgment."

"You can't do this!" Barbara shrieked, her voice reaching a hysterical pitch. "I am an old woman! I have my belongings here!"

"You have two hours to pack personal clothing and medical necessities," Deputy Miller stated flatly, tapping the body camera mounted on his chest. "Locksmiths are currently changing the exterior deadbolts. Any attempt to remove art, jewelry, or furniture registered under the corporate inventory will result in immediate felony conversion charges."

Kelsey walked out of the living room, clutching her belly, her face pale with terror. "Where are we supposed to go?"

Marcus turned his gray eyes onto her. "I believe there is a extended-stay motel near the interstate. It charges forty-two dollars a night. If you hurry, you might get a room with a working heater."

"You monster!" Barbara screamed, lunging toward Marcus with her nails extended.

Deputy Miller instantly stepped into her path, his hand resting firmly on his taser holster. "Back up, ma'am! Touch him and you go straight to the county jail!"

Evan stood frozen in the center of the foyer as moving crew workers began placing orange seizure tags on the antique oil paintings hanging along the hallway walls. The life he had built—the wealth he had stolen, the status he had assumed was his birthright—was being dismantled around him with mechanical precision.

He looked at Marcus Vance. "Where is Claire?"

Marcus offered a brief, terrible smile. "She’s at the office, Evan. Running her company."
