Chapter 5 - The Master’s Voice

The steel security shutters sealed the operating room into a fortress. The air filtration system changed its pitch, humming with a low, pressurized whir.

Lorenzo stood frozen in the center of the room, his submachine-gun-wielding guards looking nervously back and forth between their boss and the heavy steel walls that now cut them off from the rest of the estate.

"Vittorio..." Lorenzo stammered, stepping back, his cool arrogance instantly evaporating. "You... you're confused. Crane tried to kill you! I was trying to save you!"

"Shut up," Vittorio rasped.

The effort of pressing the panic button had cost him dearly. His pulse monitor was erratic, spiking into dangerous arrhythmia, but his mind was crystal clear. He looked toward the side of the room. "Nurse..."

Mara stepped up to the table immediately, placing a hand on his forehead. "Don't talk, Vittorio. Your blood pressure is spiking. You're going to tear the arterial repair."

"Finish... the job," Vittorio ordered, looking at Dr. Vance. "Finish the surgery."

Vance didn't hesitate. He pulled on a fresh pair of sterile gloves, picked up his needle driver, and leaned over the open chest cavity once more, completely ignoring the five armed men standing six feet away.

Lorenzo leveled his gun at Mara. "Tell him to unlock the doors! He has the master key code in his head! Tell him to open the vault or I’ll put a bullet through your spine!"

Before Mara could answer, Titan stood up from Dr. Crane's battered body.

The doctor was unconscious on the floor, bleeding heavily from his arm, but alive. Titan stepped slowly into the space between Lorenzo and Mara. The dog didn't growl. He simply stared at Lorenzo with a cold, terrifying intelligence.

"He won't open the doors, Lorenzo," Mara said quietly, her hand resting on the back of Titan’s neck. "This room is reinforced with four inches of ballistic steel. It was designed as a panic vault for your brother in case the estate was breached. The external security teams at the police headquarters were just alerted by that button. The state police will be here in eight minutes."

Lorenzo’s face went entirely white. "You're lying!"

"She isn't lying," Dr. Vance said, never lifting his eyes from the delicate arterial stitching inside Vittorio’s chest. "Vittorio built this room after the Detroit commission war in 2018. Once the panic lock is engaged, it can only be reset from the master terminal in the main study upstairs—or by a biometric scan of Vittorio’s right palm."

Lorenzo looked down at his brother’s right hand, which was currently resting limp against the edge of the operating table.

"Give me his hand!" Lorenzo roared, stepping forward with his gun extended. "Put his palm on the scanner panel by the door!"

Titan lunged.

He didn't bite to kill this time—he hit Lorenzo’s chest like a brown bear, his full weight slamming the younger brother against the stainless-steel instrument cabinet. Lorenzo’s gun went flying, sliding across the floor and disappearing beneath the heavy main suction unit.

The four guards aimed their submachine guns at the dog.

"Drop your weapons!" a loud, thunderous voice echoed through the room.

It wasn't Vittorio. It was Mara.

She was standing near the wall control panel, her hand hovering over a heavy glass-covered toggle switch labeled: HALON FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM.

"This is an airtight surgical vault," Mara warned, her voice ringing with absolute, terrifying authority. "If I trip this switch, the Halon gas will flood this room in four seconds. It will displace one hundred percent of the oxygen. Dr. Vance, Vittorio, and I have supplemental oxygen masks right here at the table. You and your men will be unconscious in thirty seconds and dead in two minutes."

The four guards looked at the red toggle switch, then at their boss, who was struggling to get out from beneath Titan’s heavy paws on the floor.

One of the guards—a veteran enforcer named Marco—slowly lowered the barrel of his weapon.

"Is that true, Vance?" Marco asked, his voice trembling.

"It's true," Vance said, snapping the final suture line into place with a sharp click. "I installed the system myself. Pull that switch, Mara, and this room becomes a vacuum tomb."

Marco looked down at Lorenzo, then threw his submachine gun onto the floor with a heavy metallic clatter. "I’m not dying in a box for you, Lorenzo. The boss is alive. The game is over."

The other three guards followed suit, dropping their weapons to the floor one by one.

Lorenzo lay on the floor beneath Titan, his eyes wide with horror, gasping for breath as the dog’s broad chest pressed down upon his sternum.

"Vittorio... please..." Lorenzo choked out, looking toward the operating table. "We're blood... please..."

Vittorio Bellandi slowly turned his head. His chest was stitched shut, a clean white bandage taped firmly over the wound. The cardiac monitor had stabilized into a rhythmic, steady pattern.

He looked down at his younger brother with eyes that held no anger—only a profound, cold disgust.

"You aren't my blood, Lorenzo," Vittorio whispered raspy. "My blood... doesn't run from a fight. And it doesn't hire cowards to do its killing."

Vittorio looked at Mara.

"Nurse Donnelly..."

"Yes, Mr. Bellandi?"

"Keep the dog on him," Vittorio said softly, closing his eyes as the anesthesia finally claimed him. "Until the police arrive."

Mara walked over, sat down on a stainless-steel stool beside Lorenzo, and laid her hand gently over Titan’s head.

May you like

"Good boy, Titan," she whispered.

The dog closed his eyes, let out a soft sigh, and held Lorenzo to the floor.
