Chapter 4 - The Betrayal in White

"Don't move," Crane said, his voice completely devoid of the professional polish he had maintained all evening. "Either of you."

The surgical nurses in the room gasped, backing away against the stainless-steel walls with their hands raised. Dr. Vance stood frozen beside the open chest of Vittorio Bellandi, a bloody needle driver held uselessly in his gloved fingers.

"Edmund..." Vance said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "What are you doing?"

"What should have been done three years ago, Gabriel," Crane said, his eyes flicking between Vance and Mara. "Vittorio is old. He’s paranoid. He’s tearing the organization apart with his endless feuds. Lorenzo is ready to take over. Lorenzo has the vision to bring this family into the modern era."

"Lorenzo hired the shooter tonight," Mara stated flatly. It wasn't a question.

Crane offered a small, bitter smile. "The shooter was supposed to finish the job in the music room. But that damn dog dragged Vittorio away before the second shot could land. Then you showed up." Crane glared at Mara with pure hatred. "You were supposed to be just a hired hand, nurse. You were supposed to let me fix the problem in the ambulance."

"You're a doctor," Mara said, taking a slow step to the left, positioning herself between Crane and the IV pole. "You took an oath."

"I took an oath to survive," Crane spat back. "When Lorenzo takes the seat, everyone who was loyal to Vittorio will be purged. Gabriel... you could have had a place in the new order. But you let this... this street nurse question me."

Crane raised the small pistol, aligning the front sight directly with the center of Mara’s forehead.

"Unhook the saline line, Gabriel," Crane ordered. "Flush the port manually. Let him go into cardiac arrest. We'll tell Lorenzo the blood loss was too severe. You get five million dollars deposited into an offshore account tonight, and the nurse... well, the nurse died in the crossfire during the original hit."

Dr. Vance looked down at the unconscious man lying on the table. Vittorio’s chest was still open, his heart beating with a faint, heroic rhythm beneath the metal retractors.

"I’m a surgeon, Edmund," Vance said softly. "I cut out rot. I don't cultivate it."

"Then you die with him!" Crane snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger.

CRASH!

The heavy double glass doors of the operating room didn't just open—they exploded inward in a shower of reinforced safety glass and twisting aluminum frames.

Titan didn't leap. He flew.

Ninety pounds of solid muscle and fury crashed straight through the shattering glass, hitting Dr. Crane sideways before the physician could pull the trigger. The sound of the gun discharging echoed through the room like a cannon shot, the bullet slamming harmlessly into the tiled ceiling.

Crane let out a blood-curdling shriek as he hit the floor, the heavy dog instantly pinning his torso to the ground. Titan’s massive jaws clamped down onto Crane’s right forearm, the sound of splintering bone echoing over the sterile environment.

"Titan! HOLD!" Mara screamed, her voice cutting through the chaos.

The dog froze. He didn't tear Crane’s throat out, but he kept his massive, blood-stained jaws locked firmly around the doctor's arm, his eyes burning with a terrifying, ancient rage as Crane wept and writhed on the floor beneath him.

"Drop the gun!" Vance yelled, rushing forward to kick the small pistol across the floor, away from Crane’s reaching fingers.

Outside in the corridor, the heavy thud of running boots approached fast.

Lorenzo Bellandi stepped through the shattered doorway, flanked by four armed guards with drawn weapons. His eyes swept over the room—the shattered glass, Crane pinned to the floor by the Cane Corso, Vance standing over the open chest of his brother, and Mara holding a fresh syringe of epinephrine.

"What the hell is going on here?" Lorenzo demanded, raising his weapon toward Titan.

"Don't shoot!" Dr. Vance shouted, stepping in front of the dog. "Lorenzo... your doctor just tried to murder your brother on my operating table! He poisoned the IV bag!"

Lorenzo’s face didn't show shock. It showed a cold, calculating irritation.

He didn't look at Crane. He looked at the cardiac monitor, which was still showing Vittorio’s steady, stubborn heart rhythm.

"Is he still alive?" Lorenzo asked, his voice disturbingly calm.

Vance narrowed his eyes. "Yes. The surgery is almost complete. He will survive."

Lorenzo slowly raised his silver pistol, shifting his aim from the dog straight toward Dr. Vance’s face.

"That," Lorenzo said softly, "is very unfortunate."

Mara’s blood ran cold.

The betrayal wasn't just Crane. The entire room—the guards, the estate, the underground facility—was completely under Lorenzo’s control.

Lorenzo looked at the four guards standing behind him. "Clean up this room. Make it look like the dog went crazy, killed the doctor, and attacked the surgical team. Nobody leaves this room alive."

The guards raised their submachine guns.

Suddenly, a loud, clear chime echoed from the intercom panel on the wall.

A sharp, mechanical voice spoke through the speaker overhead:

"Primary security override initiated. Vault door locked down. Outer compound perimeter sealed by external command."

The heavy steel security doors at both ends of the surgical corridor slammed down with a deafening THUD, sealing the operating suite into a impenetrable steel box.

Lorenzo spun around, his face suddenly filled with panic. "What is that? Who triggered the lockdown?!"

From the operating table, a raspy, metallic voice whispered through the room.

"I did..."

Everyone turned.

Vittorio Bellandi had reached his right arm out toward the underside of the surgical table. His trembling, blood-stained thumb was pressed firmly into a hidden red button mounted beneath the steel frame.

His dark eyes were wide open, staring directly at his younger brother.

"You always were... a terrible liar, Lorenzo," Vittorio wheezed, a faint, terrifying smile touching his pale lips.
