Part 4

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The sounds of the wedding faded into a distant blur as Ethan stared at his father.

Richard Carter stood perfectly still in the hallway.

Too still.

The kind of stillness people use when they're desperately trying not to reveal what's happening inside their heads.

Then his phone rang.

The sharp sound shattered the silence.

Richard glanced at the screen.

For the first time, Ethan saw genuine alarm flash across his face.

He immediately declined the call.

That single action told Ethan everything.

Because Richard Carter never ignored business calls.

Never.

Not during holidays.

Not during funerals.

Certainly not during his son's wedding.

But he ignored this one.

And Olivia noticed too.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Who keeps calling you, Richard?"

He didn't answer.

The phone rang again.

Same number.

This time Emma peeked around Olivia's dress and pointed.

"I know that number."

Everyone turned toward her.

Richard's face went white.

The little girl looked confused.

"That's the number Daddy used to save."

A chill swept through the room.

Ethan's heart began hammering.

"What did you say?"

Emma pointed at the screen again.

"My daddy used to get calls from that number."

Richard ended the call.

His hand was shaking.

Barely.

But shaking.

And Ethan had never seen his father afraid before.

Not once.

Then another voice entered the hallway.

"Dad?"

Ethan turned.

His cousin Ryan stood there.

Out of breath.

Pale.

Holding a tablet.

"What is going on?" Ryan asked.

Nobody answered.

Ryan looked at Richard.

Then at Ethan.

Then at Olivia.

Finally his gaze landed on Emma.

The color drained from his face.

"Oh my God."

Ethan stepped forward.

"What?"

Ryan swallowed.

"You need to see this."

He turned the tablet around.

A security video filled the screen.

Black-and-white footage.

A marina.

A timestamp from seven years ago.

The night Noah disappeared.

Ethan's knees nearly buckled.

The footage was from a warehouse camera nobody had known existed.

A camera that had only been discovered during a recent property redevelopment.

Ryan's voice trembled.

"It was archived on an old server."

Ethan barely heard him.

Because Noah was on the screen.

Alive.

Walking quickly toward the docks.

Talking on his phone.

Then another figure appeared.

A second man.

Following him.

Richard Carter grabbed the tablet.

Too fast.

Far too fast.

The screen slipped.

Cracked.

Hit the floor.

Everyone froze.

Nobody had even finished watching the video.

But Richard had already destroyed it.

The silence afterward was deafening.

Ethan slowly looked up.

His father was breathing heavily.

Cornered.

Exposed.

Terrified.

And then Ethan realized something horrifying.

An innocent man doesn't panic when evidence appears.

An innocent man watches the video.

A guilty man tries to stop everyone else from seeing it.

"Dad..."

Richard said nothing.

"Dad."

Still nothing.

Then Olivia spoke.

The words came out barely above a whisper.

"Noah told me he was going to expose everything."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Olivia..."

"He found the offshore accounts."

Ethan felt sick.

"He found the fake contracts."

Ryan stared.

"What offshore accounts?"

Olivia never looked away from Richard.

"The accounts that moved millions out of Carter Maritime."

The hallway spun.

Ethan looked at his father.

The man who had taught him to ride a bike.

The man who attended every baseball game.

The man he trusted more than anyone.

And suddenly he didn't recognize him at all.

Then Richard opened his eyes.

And finally said the one thing nobody expected.

"I never meant for Noah to disappear."

The world stopped.

Emma gasped.

Ryan stepped backward.

Olivia burst into tears.

And Ethan felt his heart shatter.

Because that wasn't a denial.

It was a confession.

The wedding guests outside were still waiting.

The minister was still standing at the altar.

The orchestra was still playing.

But none of that mattered anymore.

Because after seven years of lies...

May you like

Richard Carter had just admitted he knew exactly what happened the night Noah vanished.

And Ethan was about to learn the truth his family had buried for nearly a decade.
