part 2

Part 2
Ethan stared at the photograph.
The man standing beside Olivia looked so much like him it was unsettling.
Same dark hair.
Same square jaw.
Same height.
At first glance, they could have been brothers.
But Ethan had never seen him before.
His fingers tightened around the picture.
"Emma... who is this?"
The little girl sniffled.
"My daddy."
The room tilted.
"Where is your daddy now?"
Emma's lip trembled.
"Mom says he's gone."
Ethan looked closer.
The photo was old.
The edges were worn from being handled too often.
Olivia looked younger, happier.
The man had his arm around her.
And Emma was a baby in his arms.
Then Ethan noticed something strange.
Around the man's neck hung a silver pendant.
A pendant Ethan recognized instantly.
His stomach dropped.
Because he owned the exact same necklace.
A custom piece his grandfather had commissioned years ago.
Only six had ever been made for members of the Carter family.
Six.
No outsiders had one.
Ever.
Ethan slowly sat down on the bathroom floor.
His mind raced.
There was only one explanation that made sense.
And he hated it.
"Emma..."
The little girl looked up.
"Was your daddy named Noah?"
Her eyes widened.
"How did you know?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
Noah Carter.
His older brother.
The brother who disappeared seven years ago.
The brother everyone believed had died in a boating accident.
The brother whose body had never been found.
Outside, applause erupted somewhere in the ballroom.
Guests were taking their seats.
The wedding coordinator was probably looking for him.
But none of that mattered anymore.
Because Noah hadn't just known Olivia.
He had loved her.
He had a child with her.
And Olivia had never told Ethan any of it.
Not once.
A cold realization settled over him.
She hadn't hidden a child.
She had hidden his brother's child.
And that was far worse.
"Emma," Ethan asked carefully, "does your mom know you have this picture?"
The little girl shook her head.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because she cries when she sees it."
A knot formed in Ethan's chest.
Before he could ask another question, the bathroom door suddenly flew open.
Olivia stood there.
Still wearing her wedding gown.
Still holding her bouquet.
But the moment she saw Emma and the photograph in Ethan's hand...
The color drained from her face.
For several seconds nobody spoke.
Then Olivia whispered one word.
"No."
Emma immediately shrank backward.
"Mommy..."
Olivia's eyes filled with panic.
Not guilt.
Panic.
Real panic.
"Ethan," she said, stepping forward. "Please let me explain."
Ethan slowly stood.
"Explain what?"
She looked at the photograph.
Then at Emma.
Then at him.
And finally she broke.
The bouquet slipped from her hands and hit the floor.
"I never wanted you to find out like this."
The sentence hit harder than any confession.
Because it wasn't a denial.
It was confirmation.
Ethan's voice became dangerously quiet.
"You knew exactly who my brother was."
Tears spilled down Olivia's cheeks.
"Yes."
The room went silent.
Outside, the wedding march began playing.
Inside, Ethan felt his entire future collapsing.
Then Olivia said something that made his blood run cold.
"Noah didn't disappear, Ethan."
He stared at her.
"What?"
Olivia's hands were shaking violently now.
"Your brother didn't die in an accident."
Ethan's heart stopped.
Emma began crying again.
And Olivia looked toward the ballroom doors as if she were terrified someone else might walk in.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Someone made sure he never came home."
