Chapter 9 - THE FALL OF THE TWINS

The storm that had been brewing off the Charleston coast all afternoon finally broke around ten o'clock at night. Heavy rain lashed against the tall windows of the Whitmore estate, while thunder rumbled across the low marshes.
Inside the house, all primary electrical lights were dark, cut by Knox’s men at the main transformer down the road. But the estate was far from helpless. Emergency backup generators hummed quietly in the basement, powering the invisible infrared security network and tactical comms systems used by Julian’s team.
Claire sat in the central security office on the second floor, watching four monitor feeds displayed on encrypted tablets. Beside her stood Miller, Julian’s tactical lead, holding a silenced sidearm.
Outside in the torrential rain, six figures dressed in dark rain gear scaled the low brick wall near the south gardens. They moved quickly, believing the darkness and the storm gave them absolute cover.
What they didn't know was that every square inch of the garden was illuminated in crystal-clear green thermal imagery on Julian’s monitors.
Knox himself led the group, carrying a heavy tactical flashlight and a suppressed pistol. He was determined to force his way into the manor, locate Claire, and force her to sign a series of bearer-bond transfers before fleeing the country.
As the six men reached the wide stone terrace outside the main parlor, Knox signaled for his team to break the heavy glass of the French doors.
Before his man could raise his crowbar, high-intensity floodlights positioned around the roof perimeter suddenly snapped on with blinding force, bathing the terrace in thousands of lumens of stark white light.
"Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed through the estate’s external PA system, amplified by the thunder. "You are surrounded by private security personnel! Put your hands on your heads immediately!"
Knox spun around, blinded by the intense light, raising his pistol wildly toward the roof. "Shoot the lights! Shoot them!"
Before his enforcers could fire a single round, eight operators in full tactical gear stepped out from the shadows of the surrounding oak trees and the terrace pillars, their weapons raised, red laser targeting dots covering every member of Knox’s crew.
"Drop them!" Miller’s voice commanded over the outdoor speakers.
The five enforcers took one look at the overwhelming force arrayed against them, dropped their weapons into the wet gravel, and raised their hands in immediate surrender.
Only Knox refused to comply. Driven by panic and the absolute ruin facing him, he lunged toward the glass door, intending to take Claire hostage.
A single shot rang out—not a firearm, but a high-voltage taser fired from the shadow of the doorframe.
The prongs struck Knox squarely in the chest. Fifty thousand volts of electrical current surged through his body. He collapsed onto the wet stone terrace, twitching violently as his pistol clattered harmlessly across the tiles.
Julian Vance stepped out of the shadow of the doorway, stepping casually over the dropped gun. He looked down at Knox, who was gasping for air in the pouring rain.
"Your brother Leo was picked up at the airport fifteen minutes ago by state troopers," Julian said calmly, his dark raincoat gleaming in the floodlights. "The syndicate is finished in Charleston, Knox."
Claire walked out onto the covered porch, standing beside Julian. She looked down at Knox, the man who had sat on her velvet couch twenty-four hours ago, laughing about stealing her family's land.
Knox looked up at her through the blinding rain, his face twisted in pain and disbelief. "You... you were supposed to be nothing... just a rich girl..."
"That was your first mistake," Claire said, her voice easily cutting through the sound of the rain. "And your last."
Within ten minutes, three local police cruisers, accompanied by two unmarked federal vehicles, pulled up the long driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the wet bark of the live oaks.
The officers handcuffed Knox and his enforcers, loading them into the back of the transport vans. The lead federal agent walked up the porch steps, shaking Julian’s hand before turning to Claire.
"Miss Whitmore," the agent said respectfully. "With Knox and his brother in custody, along with the evidence your team provided from Fletcher's office, we have fully dismantled the coastal financial network. Mason Cole is currently finalizing a plea agreement that will see him serve a minimum of fifteen years in federal penitentiary."
Claire felt a deep, peaceful calm wash over her. "Thank you, Agent."
"You have a very impressive security team," the agent added, glancing at Julian with evident respect. "We rarely see operations run this cleanly."

"Mr. Vance is very thorough," Claire said, looking up at Julian.
As the police vehicles drove down the long gravel driveway, their sirens fading into the distant sound of the rain, the estate returned to absolute quiet.
