Chapter 6 - RECLAIMING THE MANOR

The black armored sedan pulled through the gates of the Whitmore estate just as the first pale light of dawn began to paint the South Carolina sky in shades of pink and gold.

The two armed guards Mason had posted at the entrance were gone, replaced by professional security operators wearing dark uniforms bearing the discreet crest of Vance Risk Advisory. They bowed their heads respectfully as the car passed.

Claire stepped out of the vehicle and walked onto the gravel driveway. The air was cool, carrying the sweet scent of jasmine and salt water from the nearby marshland.

The front doors of the grand manor were open. Inside, a team of technicians was systematically removing hidden cameras and audio monitoring devices that Mason had installed throughout the rooms.

Julian walked beside her as she entered the foyer. "We have cleared the entire house," he reported. "All of Mr. Cole’s personal belongings have been packed into crates and moved to a commercial storage facility downtown. He will not be returning here."

Claire walked into the grand parlor. The room looked different now—brighter, despite the early morning hour. She walked over to the corner where her mother’s hand-painted porcelain vase used to sit before Mason smashed it during an outburst three months ago. The table was empty, a faint circle of dust marking the spot where the heirloom had rested for decades.

She touched the wood surface gently.

"I am going to hire back Arthur," Claire said suddenly.

Julian leaned against the doorframe, watching her. "Your father's accountant?"

"Yes," Claire said, turning around. "And Mrs. Gable, the housekeeper he fired. And Vance—your uncle—if he wants his old position back as head of estate security."

"My uncle retired to Florida two months ago," Julian said with a slight smirk. "He spends his days fishing and complaining about the heat. But I believe he would be delighted to hear that you are restoring the original staff."

"What about you?" Claire asked, her gray-blue eyes locking onto his pale gray ones. "What happens to Vance Risk Advisory now that the contingency plan is complete?"

Julian adjusted the cuffs of his dark jacket. "My contract was to identify the threat, neutralize it, and ensure the safe transfer of full corporate control back to you. Technically, my job is finished."

Claire felt a sudden, unexpected tight feeling in her chest. "Technically?"

Julian walked slowly across the parlor, stopping a few feet from her. "However, Mr. Cole’s business associates—specifically the brothers Knox and Leo—are still at large. They have lost eighty-four million dollars in anticipated laundered capital tonight. They are dangerous, desperate men who may attempt to exert pressure on you or your board."

"Are you offering to extend your contract?" Claire asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I am offering to ensure that no one ever enters this house without your explicit permission again," Julian said quietly. "If that requires my personal presence, then yes."

Claire looked at him—this silent, formidable man who had watched her from the shadows, not to control her, but to protect her until she was ready to stand up for herself.

"I accepts your offer, Mr. Vance," she said.

"Call me Julian," he replied softly.

An hour later, Claire sat at the long mahogany breakfast table in the dining room. The dust motes still danced in the sunlight, but the heavy atmosphere of terror had completely evaporated.

Mrs. Gable, whom Julian’s team had contacted and brought to the house at seven in the morning, entered the room carrying a tray with fresh coffee, warm biscuits, and fruit. The older woman had tears in her eyes as she set the tray down before Claire.

"Oh, Miss Claire," Mrs. Gable whispered, wiping her hands on her apron. "It’s so good to see you back in your own house. We were all so worried about you."

"I know, Mrs. Gable," Claire said, taking the woman’s hands into her own. "I’m sorry it took me so long to fix things."

"You have nothing to apologize for," the housekeeper said firmly. "Not ever again."

After Mrs. Gable left the room, Claire poured herself a fresh cup of coffee. She picked up her phone—now completely secured with high-grade encryption installed by Julian’s team—and dialed the direct line for the District Attorney’s office.

"This is Claire Whitmore," she said clearly when the assistant answered. "I am calling to provide a formal statement regarding the federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and attempted assault charges against Mason Cole."

She leaned back in her chair, looking out through the tall French doors at the sun rising over the live oaks. For the first time in nine months, she breathed freely.
