Chapter 5 - The Glass House

The Mercer family estate in Greenwich was a sprawling stone manor built on a high ridge overlooking the Hudson River. Surrounded by heavy iron gates and tall pine trees, it was a place where decisions were made far away from the eyes of the public.

The black SUV pulled through the gates, grinding over the wet gravel driveway before coming to a stop in front of the grand entrance steps.

Claire got out of the car alongside Vincent and Frank.

“You don't have to come inside, Claire,” Vincent said as they walked up the stone steps. “You’ve done more than enough.”

“Evelyn asked me to make sure this ended,” Claire said, her voice unwavering despite the cold rain. “I’m staying until it’s finished.”

Vincent gave a single, approving nod. He pushed open the heavy mahogany front doors.

Inside the grand double-height foyer, standing near the marble fireplace with a leather briefcase in his hand, was Graham Harlow. He was pacing nervously, sipping a cup of coffee provided by the house staff.

When he saw Vincent walk in, accompanied by Frank and Claire, Harlow’s face instantly relaxed into a practiced, smooth smile.

“Vincent!” Harlow said, stepping forward with an extended hand. “Thank God you’re back. I’ve been trying to reach you. We have a serious situation. Nathan’s attorneys are filing an emergency petition for temporary custody of the baby based on Evelyn’s medical state.”

Harlow tapped his briefcase. “I have prepared counter-papers that transfer full legal decision-making power to you, but we need to execute them immediately before the family court judge signs Nathan’s order.”

Vincent didn't take Harlow’s offered hand. He walked slowly past him, unbuttoning his tailored suit jacket and setting his silver pocket watch down on the glass side table.

“That’s very thoughtful of you, Graham,” Vincent said softly, his back turned to the lawyer. “You’ve always taken such good care of my family’s legal needs.”

“I do what I can, Vincent,” Harlow said, glancing nervously at Claire, who was standing quietly near the entrance. “Why is the housekeeper here? We need to keep this meeting strictly between us.”

Vincent turned around slowly.

“Do you know what I remember most about my father, Graham?” Vincent asked, his voice echoing off the marble walls.

Harlow blinked, caught off guard. “Your father? He... he was a visionary man, Vincent.”

“My father used to tell me that a enemy who strikes you from the front is just a competitor,” Vincent said, taking a step toward Harlow. “But a man who sits at your dinner table, drinks your wine, and sells your sister to a scoundrel... that man isn't an enemy. He’s a parasite.”

Harlow’s smile froze. The color slowly drained from his face. “Vincent... I don't understand what you’re saying.”

Vincent reached out and tapped the leather briefcase under Harlow’s arm. “Open it.”

“Vincent, these are confidential legal—"

“OPEN IT!” Vincent’s voice thundered through the foyer like a cannon blast, shattering the quiet atmosphere.

Harlow flinched, his hands trembling violently as he laid the briefcase on the table and popped the brass latches. Inside were stacks of legal documents, including a draft that surrendered Evelyn’s estate rights to a holding company co-managed by Nathan Cross and Graham Harlow.

Vincent picked up the document, scanned it for three seconds, and then slowly tore it in half, letting the pieces fall into the burning fireplace.

“You were there when my sister was married,” Vincent whispered, stepping so close to Harlow that the lawyer was forced to lean back against the marble mantelpiece. “I paid your firm three million dollars a year to protect my family. And you gave Nathan the legal tools to lock my sister in a room and bleed her dry.”

“It... it was Nathan!” Harlow stammered, his composure completely collapsing into pure, pathetic terror. “He forced me! He had records of my offshore accounts! He threatened to ruin me!”

“You ruined yourself the moment you touched my sister’s life,” Vincent said coldly.

Outside, the wail of police sirens broke through the storm, growing rapidly louder as multiple squad cars pulled up the long driveway. Red and blue lights flashed wildly across the high glass windows of the foyer.

Harlow looked toward the windows, a pathetic flicker of hope touching his face. “The police...”

“Yes,” Vincent said calmly, leaning in close to Harlow’s ear. “DA Reyes is outside with the federal task force. You aren't going to a cozy white-collar facility, Graham. You are going to state prison for criminal conspiracy and human endangerment. And I will make sure every inmate in that facility knows exactly who you are.”

The heavy front doors were thrown open, and six armed state troopers pushed into the foyer, led by DA Reyes.

“Graham Harlow,” Reyes announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, criminal conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Place your hands behind your back.”

Two troopers grabbed Harlow, pulling his arms behind him and slamming him against the marble table as the cuffs clicked shut. Harlow wept openly, his expensive suit wrinkled, his dignity completely destroyed as he was dragged out into the rain.

Vincent watched him go without a word. Then he turned to Claire.

“Come,” Vincent said gently. “Let’s go see my sister.”
