Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Dark

The sleek black SUV sat idling in the rain outside 14th Street Station, its tinted windows reflecting the city lights.

When Claire stepped out of the subway exit, Frank was already waiting by the open rear door, an umbrella held high over his head.

“Get in, Miss Donovan,” Frank said quietly. “Mr. Mercer is waiting.”

Claire climbed into the plush leather interior of the vehicle. Sitting in the back seat was Vincent Mercer, dressed in a dark charcoal suit, a tablet open on his knees displaying real-time security feeds from various locations across the city. Beside him sat a woman in her late forty’s with sharp silver hair—District Attorney Karen Reyes.

Claire froze slightly, looking between the crime boss and the city’s top prosecutor sitting together in the same car.

“Sit down, Claire,” Vincent said calmly. “This is DA Reyes. She’s been investigating Nathan Cross’s corporate network for six months, but she lacked the primary insider evidence to bypass his legal immunity.”

Claire took off her wet backpack and pulled out the black encrypted hard drive and the binder of financial records, handing them directly to DA Reyes.

Reyes pulled out a secure laptop, plugged the hard drive into a side port, and began typing in the decryption key that was written on the parchment note from the red key frame.

Within seconds, lines of code flashed across the screen, opening hundreds of audio files, bank statements, and scanned memos.

Reyes put on a pair of sleek glasses, her eyes scanning the screen rapidly. As she clicked on an audio file dated three weeks prior, a speaker inside the car played the recorded conversation clear as crystal.

Nathan’s voice echoed through the car:

"Harlow, make sure the financial restructuring papers for Mercer Logistics are ready by the end of the month. Once Evelyn signs the parental custody transfer, Vincent will have no choice but to absorb the losses through his dummy corporations. If he resists, we release the fabricated wire-transfer documents showing he was laundering money through his sister’s foundation."

Harlow’s voice responded:

"And Mrs. Cross? What if she refuses to sign?"

Nathan’s cold laugh followed:

"She’s eight months pregnant and isolated in that house. A few days of stress, a couple of altered prescriptions from Dr. Vance, and she’ll sign whatever I put in front of her just to make it stop."

The car was silent.

DA Reyes closed the laptop with a heavy, sharp snap. Her eyes were hard as steel.

“This is irrefutable,” Reyes said. “Extortion, conspiracy, medical endangerment, falsification of legal records, and domestic violence resulting in severe physical injury. We have enough here to freeze every asset Nathan Cross and Graham Harlow own within the hour.”

Vincent turned his head slowly to look out the wet window. His face was entirely devoid of anger; instead, it held a calm, terrifying finality.

“What about Harlow?” Vincent asked quietly.

“My team is issuing an immediate arrest warrant for Mr. Harlow as we speak,” Reyes said, picking up her phone to make the call. “He will be in federal custody before noon.”

“No,” Vincent said softly, his voice cutting through the car. “Not yet.”

Reyes frowned. “Mr. Mercer, we do things by the book.”

“Harlow is currently at my estate in Greenwich,” Vincent said, turning his cold grey eyes toward the prosecutor. “He thinks he’s meeting me to discuss my sister’s medical power of attorney. He’s carrying a briefcase with forged guardianship papers that he plans to present to the judge at two o'clock.”

Vincent pulled a silver pocket watch from his vest, checking the time.

“Give me thirty minutes with him in my house, Karen. Then your officers can come in and take what’s left of him.”

Reyes looked at Vincent, then at Claire, and finally at the laptop containing the evidence that had just saved the case of her career.

“Twenty minutes, Vincent,” Reyes said firmly. “And not a single drop of blood on the driveway. The press is already watching.”

Vincent nodded once. “Frank. Drive to the estate.”
