Chapter 9 - The Siege of Shadows

Panic erupted instantly across the Great Hall.

Screams rang out under the high stone ceilings as hundreds of wealthy patrons scattered in the dark, knocking over champagne flutes and display cases.

Before the darkness had even fully set, Damian’s heavy hand slammed around Sienna’s waist, pulling her flush against his chest and driving her back behind the massive stone pillar of the Egyptian exhibit.

"Silas!" Damian roared into the darkness.

"Right behind you, boss!" Silas’s voice called out over the sound of screaming crowds. "Night vision on! We've got six hostiles entering through the main atrium doors!"

Pop! Pop! Pop!

The distinct sound of suppressed gunfire echoed through the dark museum. Glass display cases shattered nearby as bullets bit into ancient stone.

Damian drew his SIG Sauer from beneath his velvet tuxedo jacket, pulling Sienna firmly behind his body.

"Listen to me," Damian whispered into her ear, his breath hot against her skin amidst the chaos. "They aren't here for the Commission. Viktor realized he couldn't beat me in front of the families. He's taking you to destroy my standing."

"I'm not going with them," Sienna spat out, her hand finding a heavy bronze replica statue resting on a nearby display pedestal. She grabbed it, holding it like a weapon. "I'm not a bargaining chip."

Damian let out a brief, fierce chuckle despite the gunfire tearing through the room. "That's my girl."

He leaned out from behind the pillar, firing three rapid shots into the shadows. A muffled groan echoed from thirty feet away as a gunman collapsed onto the marble floor.

"Silas, clear the service stairs to the lower garage!" Damian ordered, moving methodically through the exhibits while keeping Sienna pressed to his side. "We take the armored secondary vehicle!"

"Moving!" Silas roared back.

They sprinted through the darkened wing of European sculptures, bullet impacts sparking against the stone walls behind them. Damian moved with terrifying precision—stopping every few feet to return fire, dropping two more attackers who attempted to flank them near the stairwell entrance.

They reached the heavy steel emergency doors leading to the underground loading docks. Silas kicked the door open, firing two shots into the lock mechanism to clear the panic bar.

They burst into the brightly lit subterranean parking bay.

Standing near the armored SUV was Viktor Nikolli himself, holding an automatic weapon, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries.

"End of the line, Damian!" Viktor yelled, raising his weapon. "You should have taken the check and walked away!"

Before Viktor could pull the trigger, Sienna moved.

She didn't run. She didn't hide.

She threw the heavy bronze statue she had been carrying with all her strength directly at the overhead emergency sprinkler valve above Viktor's head.

CRACK!

The brass valve shattered under the impact.

Thousands of gallons of pressurized water burst from the ceiling in a roaring deluge, blinding Viktor and his men, soaking their weapons, and creating instant chaos in the narrow garage.

"Now!" Sienna screamed.

Damian didn't waste a millisecond. He surged forward through the blinding spray of water like a unleashed nightmare.

He caught the nearest mercenary with a brutal kick to the knee, ripping the rifle from his hands, and used him as a human shield against Viktor’s wild gunfire. Damian returned fire through the water, dropping the three remaining mercenaries in less than four seconds.

Viktor attempted to turn and run toward a secondary exit, but Damian closed the distance instantly.

He tackled the Albanian boss to the hard concrete floor, grabbing him by his leather collar, dragging him out of the water spray, and slamming him face-first against the reinforced hood of the armored car.

Viktor spat blood onto the black paint, gasping for air as Damian’s heavy knee pinned him down.

"You broke sanctuary, Viktor," Damian growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble of absolute judgment. "You brought war into a peace hall."

"Do it," Viktor choked out, his eyes wide with wild, pathetic hatred. "Kill me! The Commission will destroy you for executing a boss!"

Damian leaned down, pressing the cold, wet barrel of his pistol directly against the base of Viktor’s skull.

"The Commission," a clear, confident voice called out from the doorway, "is watching."

Damian paused.

Standing at the top of the garage stairs, surrounded by twelve heavily armed Russo guards, were Don Lorenzo Moretti and Carmine Falcone. They had been escorted down through the VIP evacuation route.

Don Lorenzo walked down the steps, his old eyes taking in the blood, the water pouring from the roof, and Viktor pinned beneath Damian’s weapon.

"We saw the whole thing, Damian," Don Lorenzo said, his deep voice resounding through the concrete bay. "Viktor ordered his men to cut the lights and attack your woman. He broke the sacred peace of the Met."

Don Lorenzo looked down at Viktor with absolute disgust.

"The Commission revokes his status," the old man declared. "He is no longer a boss. He is dirt on our street."

Don Lorenzo looked up at Damian.

"Finish it."

Damian didn't hesitate.

BANG.

The sound echoed through the subterranean garage, followed by total silence, save for the patter of the sprinkler water draining into the sewer grates.

Damian released the lifeless body, letting it slide down to the cold concrete floor. He straightened his cuffs, ran a wet hand through his dark hair, and turned to look at Sienna.

She stood twenty feet away, drenched from the sprinkler water, her emerald dress clinging to her form, holding her head high among the kings of New York.

Damian walked over to her. He took her wet hands in his, bringing them to his lips, kissing her fingers one by one.

"It's over," he whispered.

"No," Sienna smiled softly, looking into his eyes with absolute devotion. "It's just beginning."
