Chapter 8 - The Viper at the Met

The Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was bathed in dramatic golden light. Hundreds of high-society elite—billionaires, foreign diplomats, federal judges, and syndicate bosses—mingled beneath the towering stone arches, sipping champagne among ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Sienna was a vision of breathtaking elegance.

She wore a strapless, floor-length gown of emerald satin with a dramatic side slit that revealed her sleek heels. Her auburn hair fell in soft, voluminous waves over one shoulder, and around her neck hung a magnificent necklace of teardrop emeralds and diamonds—a gift from Damian that had arrived in her suite earlier that afternoon.

Beside her, Damian was the undisputed center of gravity. Dressed in a classic black velvet tuxedo, he moved through the crowd of powerful men with effortless dominance. Politicians bowed their heads as he walked past; corrupt judges whispered greetings; corporate rivals offered nervous smiles.

Sienna walked on his arm, her posture regal, her confidence absolute. She was no longer the frightened girl from the service corridor. She was Damian Russo’s equal.

"Mr. Russo," a smooth, raspy voice called out from near the Temple of Dendur exhibit.

Damian stopped, his body instantly hardening into a stance of quiet alertness.

Approaching them was Viktor Nikolli, accompanied by his personal attorney and a sleek European woman in a red silk dress. Viktor wore an expensive Italian tuxedo, but his raw, brutish nature bled through the tailored fabric like ink through paper.

"Viktor," Damian acknowledged coldness in his tone. "I assumed you’d be in Astoria managing your accounting problems."

Viktor’s lip curled into a sneer. He glanced at Sienna, his icy eyes lingering on the emeralds sparkling against her collarbone.

"I came to celebrate the harbor expansion," Viktor said smoothly, taking a champagne glass from a passing waiter's tray. "And to congratulate you on your new... asset."

"She has a name, Viktor," Damian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous baritone that caused the nearby guests to give them a wide berth.

"Of course," Viktor smiled insidiously. "Miss Hayes. The daughter of the late Detective Hayes. It is ironic, isn't it? A cop’s daughter wearing family jewels bought with blood money."

Sienna stepped forward slightly, her hand resting firmly on Damian’s forearm to keep him from striking the man down on the museum floor.

"My father spent his life protecting people from parasites who feed on the vulnerable, Mr. Nikolli," Sienna said, her voice clear, confident, and ringing through the surrounding air. "He would be very proud to see that I’ve aligned myself with a man who actually honors his word, rather than a coward who sends enforcers to attack women in dark alleys."

A few nearby guests gasped softly.

Viktor’s face flushed a deep, ugly red. His jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his neck strained against his collar.

"You talk bold for a waitress whose brother is shoveling coal on a Jersey dock," Viktor whispered venomously, leaning closer. "Enjoy the party, Miss Hayes. New York is a very tall city. People fall from high places all the time."

"Is that a threat, Viktor?" Damian stepped into Viktor's personal space, his imposing height completely overshadowing the Albanian boss. The air between them instantly turned to ice. "Because if it is, we don't need to wait for the Commission to meet again. We can settle this right now in the garden."

Viktor stared into Damian’s dark, deadly eyes. For five long seconds, he held his ground. But the absolute lack of fear in Damian’s expression eventually forced Viktor to yield.

"Just friendly advice, Damian," Viktor muttered, stepping back. "Enjoy your evening."

As Viktor turned and disappeared into the crowd, Silas approached from behind, leaning down to speak into Damian’s ear.

"Boss," Silas murmured, his voice laced with deep concern. "Security just reported a breach at the East Gate parking structure. Three of Viktor's men just disarmed our perimeter guards."

Damian’s eyes narrowed to slits. "They aren't trying to fight us here. It was a distraction."

Suddenly, the lights inside the Great Hall flickered—and plunged the entire museum into pitch-black darkness.
