Chapter 8 - The Clean Slate

By ten o'clock on Monday morning, the storm had cleared, leaving the Connecticut sky bright, crisp, and pale blue.

Inside the glass-walled studio overlooking the trout pond, Evelyn sat at her twelve-foot drafting table.

The sun shone through the windows, illuminating hundreds of colorful fabric swatches, architectural blueprints, and fresh sketches for her upcoming international exhibition in Paris.

The heavy folio containing the court documents, the eviction notices, and the voting share transfers had been removed from the room, returned to the vaulted archives of Sterling, Vance & Croft in Manhattan.

A quiet knock sounded at the sliding glass door.

Nora Bell stepped inside, holding a small silver tray with a pot of fresh Earl Grey tea, a porcelain cup, and a single warm scone on a small plate.

"Morning, Mrs. Vance," Nora said smoothly, setting the tray down on the edge of the drafting table.

Evelyn looked up, a soft, genuine smile touching her eyes.

"It's good to hear my real name again, Nora."

"It's a good name," Nora said, adjusting the tea napkin. "The estate guards finished clearing the cottage near the pond an hour ago. The locks have all been changed. The interior design crew from New York arrives at noon to begin renovating the main house."

"What are they doing first?" Evelyn asked, picking up her teacup.

"Demolishing the east wing," Nora replied with a small, quiet wink. "Turning it into an art gallery and a greenhouse for winter orchids."

Evelyn let out a light, quiet laugh that sounded free, weightless, and clear.

She walked to the glass wall, holding her warm teacup, looking out across the quiet surface of the pond toward the stone mansion sitting on the hill.

Her phone buzzed once on the drafting table.

She walked back over, picked it up, and looked at the screen.

It was a push notification from the Wall Street Journal:

CARTER HOME TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES IMMEDIATE EXECUTIVE RESTRUCTURING; RYAN CARTER RESIGNS AS CEO; VANCE FAMILY OFFICE ASSUMES DIRECT BOARD CONTROL.

Evelyn did not open the article. She did not scroll down to read the stock comments or the financial analysis.

She simply swiped the notification away, turned off the phone screen, and set it face-down on the table.

She walked back to the glass wall, took a sip of her tea, and watched the morning sun reflect off the water, clean, bright, and entirely her own.
