Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM INVASION

The corporate glass tower of Sullivan & Croft Financial rose forty stories above the bustling heart of Grand Avenue. It was a monument to high finance, marble foyers, and sleek, silver luxury.

Inside the main 38th-floor executive boardroom, Jason Sullivan was standing at the head of a twenty-foot mahogany table, holding a laser pointer and addressing twelve of the firm’s most powerful institutional investors and board members.

Beside him, pouring expensive sparkling water into crystal glasses, was Chelsea Vance. She looked radiant, her blonde hair perfectly styled, wearing a chic white pencil dress that showed off her slim figure. She was glowing with a subtle, smug triumph, occasionally checking her phone under the table to watch the likes and comments roll in on her latest Instagram post.

"As you can see from our Q3 projections," Jason announced, flashing a slide onto the giant digital display, "our wealth management division has increased asset retention by eighteen percent. We are primed for the merger with Vanguard Capital next month."

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom didn't just open—they slammed back against the marble walls with a thunderous crack.

The twelve board members jumped in their leather seats. Jason froze, his laser pointer slipping from his fingers and clattering across the mahogany table. Chelsea gasped, nearly spilling a glass of sparkling water over an investor's lap.

Four heavily armed Metro Police tactical officers in black uniforms swept into the room, securing the perimeter walls.

Behind them walked Prosecutor Vance Reynolds, carrying a thick leather briefcase, followed closely by Captain Edward Harris.

And finally, walking side by side, came my father—Police Commissioner Gavin Potter, dressed in his full formal dress uniform with six stars gleaming on his collar—and me, holding my ultrasound photo in one hand and my arm wrapped securely in my father’s elbow.

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Jason’s face went from polished corporate confidence to ash-gray in less than one second. His eyes darted frantically from me, to my baby bump, to the six stars on my father's collar, and finally to the four armed officers standing at the door.

"N-Nora?" Jason stammered, his voice dropping an octave as his throat went bone-dry. "What... what is the meaning of this? I told you I was in a meeting! Why are there police officers in my boardroom?"

Chelsea stepped forward, her cheeks flushing with angry red blotches. She pointed a manicured finger at me. "What is wrong with you, Nora?! Did you seriously bring a bunch of fake cops here to throw a hysterical pregnancy tantrum because Jason spent the weekend working?!"

Captain Harris didn't even look at her. He turned to his sergeant and said, "Secure the suspect."

Before Chelsea could process the command, two heavy-set tactical officers stepped forward, grabbed her wrists, twisted them behind her back, and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sharp, echoing SNAP.

"Hey! Get your filthy hands off me!" Chelsea shrieked, struggling frantically against the steel restraints. "Jason! Do something! They’re putting handcuffs on me! Tell them who I am!"

"Silence!" Captain Harris barked, his voice booming off the glass windows so loudly that two board members physically flinched.

"Jason!" Chelsea screamed, tears of panic finally breaking through her heavy mascara. "Tell them!"

Jason took a step back, his hands shaking violently as he looked at the board members, who were all staring at him in utter horror. "Captain... please, there’s been a massive misunderstanding. Chelsea is my executive assistant. Whatever personal squabble she has with my wife, it shouldn't be handled in front of my board of directors—"

"This is not a personal squabble, Mr. Sullivan," Prosecutor Reynolds interrupted, opening his briefcase and pulling out a blue-bound legal document. "I am Vance Reynolds, Senior Special Prosecutor for the State Attorney's Office. I am here to execute an emergency felony arrest warrant for Chelsea Vance for Felony Stalking, Terroristic Threats, Criminal Destruction of Property, and Reckless Endangerment."

The lead board member, a wealthy seventy-year-old investor named Arthur Croft, stood up from his chair. "Reckless endangerment? Destruction of property? What on earth is going on here, Jason?"

Prosecutor Reynolds didn't answer Jason. Instead, he clicked a remote control on the podium, overriding Jason’s financial presentation on the giant digital display screen.

Instantly, the 4K surveillance video from the hospital garage filled the seventy-inch boardroom monitors.

The twelve investors watched in stunned, horrified silence as Chelsea Vance was shown smashing my Volvo's windows, gouging the hood, and shredding my unborn daughter’s car seat. The final slide on the giant screen was a high-resolution blow-up of Chelsea’s Instagram post, showing her smiling face next to the destroyed car seat, complete with her caption calling me a "pathetic baby-trapping wife."

The boardroom descended into pure chaos.

"Good God," Arthur Croft whispered, staring at the screen in complete disgust before turning his furious gaze onto Jason. "Is this true?!"

Jason looked like he was about to vomit. He stumbled toward me, holding out his hands in a pathetic, desperate plea. "Nora... Nora, baby, please! I didn't know she was going to do that! I swear I didn't know!"

My father stepped directly between Jason and me. He towered over my husband, his six-foot-three frame completely blocking Jason from coming a single inch closer.

"Stand back, son," my father said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it felt like ice hitting iron.

Jason blinked, looking up at my father’s uniform in total confusion. "Who... who are you? Why are you calling me son? Nora, who is this officer?!"

My father reached into his breast pocket, pulled out his gold Commissioner’s badge, and held it three inches from Jason’s pale face.

"I am Police Commissioner Gavin Potter," my father said softly. "And the woman you just abandoned in a hospital garage while she carries my granddaughter... is my only child."

CHAPTER 4 CONTINUED: THE BREAKING POINT

The words hung in the air of the boardroom like a unexploded bomb.

Jason’s eyes widened so far I thought his cornea would split. He looked at my father’s gold badge. He looked at the six stars on his collar. He looked back at me, his mouth opening and closing in complete, absolute, unadulterated terror.

"C-Commissioner... Potter?" Jason stammered, his knees visibly trembling inside his tailored trousers. "You're... Nora's father is a school teacher... she said he taught history..."

"I taught criminal law at the Police Academy for fifteen years, Mr. Sullivan," my father corrected coldly. "And right now, you are going to learn a very hard lesson about accountability."

"Jason!" Chelsea howled as the tactical officers began dragging her toward the boardroom door. "Do something! Call our lawyers! You promised me you were going to leave her! You promised me we were taking the firm’s offshore account to the Caymans next month!"

Every single person in the room froze.

Arthur Croft, the senior founding partner of the firm, snapped his head toward Chelsea. "What did you just say?! What offshore account?!"

Jason’s face went from pale ash to a horrifying, ghost-like blue. "Chelsea, shut up! Shut your mouth!"

"No! You told me we were moving three million from the Vanguard client trust into our private account once the merger closed!" Chelsea screamed hysterically as she was pulled out into the elevator lobby. "You told me she was just an annoying roadblock! You said the baby wasn't even yours!"

The double doors slid shut, cutting off Chelsea’s hysterical shrieks, but the damage was already done.

Arthur Croft walked over to the podium, grabbed his personal cell phone, and dialed a number. "Get internal audit and legal on the phone right now," Croft said into the phone, his voice shaking with fury. "Lock down Jason Sullivan’s trading floor credentials immediately. Freeze all firm accounts associated with his department."

Croft turned to my father, bowing his head slightly in deep respect. "Commissioner Potter... I apologize deeply for this disgrace. Our firm had no knowledge of your daughter's ordeal or Mr. Sullivan's actions."

"See that your internal audit team cooperates fully with Prosecutor Reynolds, Mr. Croft," my father said crisply. "Because my team will be seizing every server in this building by five o'clock today."

Jason sank into an executive leather chair, burying his head in his hands, trembling uncontrollably. He looked up at me, tears streaming down his face. "Nora... please. We can fix this. Think of our family! Think of Clara!"

I walked past my father, stopping directly in front of the chair where my husband sat broken.

I pulled my heavy diamond engagement ring off my left hand—the ring he had spent three years reminding me cost fifty thousand dollars. I stepped forward and dropped it directly into his cold cup of sparkling water.

Plop.

"My name is Nora Potter," I said, my voice ringing clear and true across the silent boardroom. "And the only thing you are going to see of your daughter... is the child support statement my father’s legal team serves you in prison."

I turned on my heel, took my father’s offered arm, and walked out of the executive suite into the afternoon light.
