Chapter 3 - THE TRAP IS SET

For the remaining forty-eight hours leading up to the ceremony, the Westchester estate operated under a reign of absolute, hidden surveillance. Every room, every corridor, every vehicle, and every phone line connected to Vivian Crawford or Damian Moretti was tapped, recorded, and mirrored directly to a secure server at the Federal Building in Manhattan.

Vivian remained completely oblivious to the trap snapping shut around her. She walked through the marble halls of my home like a queen inspecting her domain, barking orders at the catering staff, demanding changes to the seating arrangements, and treating my mother with a terrifying mix of passive-aggressive cruelty and public affection whenever domestic staff were in the room.

On Thursday evening, the night before the formal rehearsal dinner, Vivian made her move against Sophie.

I watched from the surveillance room as Vivian walked into the main security office on the ground floor. She was holding her hand to her chest, her eyes wide with performative distress, speaking to Chief Security Officer Thomas—a man who, as our background checks had revealed two hours earlier, had received a fifty-thousand-dollar cash deposit into his wife’s bank account the previous week.

“Thomas,” Vivian sobbed softly, putting a delicate lace handkerchief to her nose. “I hate to say this, but I’ve noticed several valuable items missing from my dressing room over the past month. Small pieces of jewelry, vintage coins... and now, my grandmother’s diamond lily brooch is missing.”

Thomas feigned immediate shock. “Miss Crawford, that’s impossible. All our staff are thoroughly vetted.”

“I know, I know,” Vivian said, lowering her voice. “I suspect the new girl... Sophie. I saw her lurking near my suite yesterday afternoon. I think we need to search her personal locker before she leaves her shift tonight.”

It was a classic, clumsy execution. Thomas immediately agreed, leading two junior security guards down to the housekeeping breakroom.

They summoned Sophie from the laundry facility. The young woman stood in her worn grey uniform, her face flushed from the heat of the commercial steam presses, looking bewildered as Thomas demanded she unlock her locker.

“I haven't taken anything, sir,” Sophie said, her hands trembling as she pulled her key ring out. “I’ve worked here for four years. Mrs. Moretti trusts me.”

“Just open the locker, Bennett,” Thomas barked.

Sophie unlocked the thin metal door. Thomas immediately reached inside, bypassed her spare apron, and pulled out the folded stack of legal documents that Damian had planted twenty-four hours earlier, along with a velvet jewelry pouch containing the diamond lily brooch that Vivian had handed Sophie to polish.

“Well, well,” Thomas said triumphantly, holding the items up for the junior guards to see. “Looks like we have a thief. Forged trust documents and a two-hundred-thousand-dollar brooch.”

Sophie’s eyes went wide with pure horror. “That’s not mine! I didn't put those there! Miss Crawford handed me that brooch to polish yesterday morning!”

“Save it for the police,” Thomas sneered, grabbing her roughly by the upper arm.

In the surveillance bunker, I picked up my radio. “Marco. Step in now.”

Ten seconds later, Marco Santini walked into the housekeeping breakroom, accompanied by two of my personal, ultra-loyal bodyguards.

“Release her, Thomas,” Marco said, his voice flat and heavy.

Thomas blinked, surprised by Marco’s sudden presence. “Marco? What are you doing down here? This girl just stole high-value property from Miss Crawford—”

“I said release her,” Marco repeated, stepping directly into Thomas’s personal space. His hand rested openly on his holstered firearm. “Mr. Moretti’s explicit orders are that no staff members are to be detained, questioned, or removed from this property until he returns from his trip tomorrow morning. Put the items in a evidence bag, lock the locker, and get out of this hallway.”

Thomas hesitated, calculating his options, before surrendering to Marco’s authority. “Fine. But Mr. Moretti will hear about this the moment he lands.”

“He certainly will,” Marco said coldly.

Once Thomas and the guards had retreated, Sophie slumped against the metal locker, tears spilling down her round cheeks, her chest heaving as she fought for air.

Marco walked over to her, his harsh expression softening slightly. He pulled a clean handkerchief from his coat and handed it to her.

“You’re okay, kid,” Marco said gently. “Don't say a word to anyone. Go up to Mrs. Moretti’s suite. She wants you to stay with her tonight.”

Sophie wiped her eyes, looking up at Marco in complete confusion. “Why is this happening, Mr. Santini? I love Mrs. Moretti. I would never steal from this family.”

“We know,” Marco replied softly. “The boss knows everything. Just keep Mrs. Moretti safe for one more night.”

Upstairs in the master suite, Lucia was waiting. When Sophie entered the room, red-eyed and trembling, my mother held out her small, frail arms. The young maid sat on the edge of the bed, and my mother held her tightly, stroking her brown hair as if she were her own daughter.

“Don't cry, little bird,” Lucia whispered into Sophie’s ear, her eyes fixed on the hidden camera in the ceiling corner. “My son is not blind. The storm is coming, and when it hits, those snakes will have nowhere left to hide.”

From twenty feet below the floorboards, I watched the two of them on the central monitor.

The strategy was set. The legal documents were secured. The federal warrants were signed and sealed by a federal judge in Brooklyn.

Vivian Crawford thought she was stepping onto a altar of gold and prestige.

In reality, she was walking straight into an execution chamber built entirely of her own greed.
