Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

I sat on the edge of the leather sofa in the study, the folded note clutched so tightly in my hand that the paper crinkled beneath my fingers.

Julian had set the pistol on his desk, his anger drained, leaving behind only the cold, hard shell of a man who had been fighting a war in the dark for twenty years.

"He's alive," I whispered to the empty air of the room. "All these years... my mother died believing her son was at the bottom of the lake. I spent twenty years blaming myself for not stopping him from leaving the house that night."

"He had to stay dead, Clara," Julian said softly. "If my father had known David survived, your mother would have been killed within twenty-four hours. You would never have made it to your tenth birthday. David stayed away to keep you alive."

"And now?" I looked up, anger flaring through my grief like a forest fire. "Now he comes back? Now he uses me as leverage against you?"

"He isn't using you as leverage against me," Julian corrected, his voice grave. "He is using you to force my hand against my uncle."

"Your uncle?"

"Richard Bennett died three years ago," Julian explained, rolling his chair closer to the window. "My father is gone. But his younger brother, Marcus Bennett, took control of the family board. Marcus is the one who ran the enforcement teams in 2006. He is the one who ordered the hit on David. And Marcus is currently sixty seconds away from discovering that you are in this house."

Right on cue, a red light on the study's internal communication console began to flash frantically.

A quiet, automated chime echoed through the room.

"Warning: Perimeter breach at South Gate. Unidentified vehicle entering estate grounds."

Julian didn't panic. His face turned into a mask of pure steel. He reached forward and pressed a button on the console.

"Mrs. Gable," Julian said into the speaker.

"Mr. Bennett!" the housekeeper's voice came through, filled with panic. "It's Marcus! He just passed through the main gate with four security cars! He says he received an anonymous tip that an unauthorized person is on the premises!"

Julian looked directly at me. "David leaked your location to Marcus."

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. "Why would my brother tell Marcus I was here?!"

"Because David wants Marcus to come here," Julian said, his mind working with terrifying speed. "David wants Marcus in this house tonight. He is setting a trap for the man who tried to murder him twenty years ago... and he is using you as the bait."

I stood up, terror seizing my throat. "My children... Brandon and Emma—"

"They are safe," Julian interrupted firmly. "I placed two of my personal, trusted security officers outside your neighbor's apartment four hours ago. No one touches your children, Clara. I give you my word on my life."

The heavy roar of multiple high-powered engines echoed through the rain outside. Headlights swept across the frosted glass windows of the study, illuminating the dark tree lines of the estate.

"What do we do?" I gasped.

Julian reached into the side pocket of his wheelchair, pulled out a small black flash drive, and tossed it to me.

"That drive contains the decryption codes for the original ledgers David stole," Julian said. "If Marcus finds you here with that drive, he will kill us both and claim it was an armed home invasion."

"Where do I go?"

Julian pushed a hidden panel on the side of his desk. With a low, hydraulic hiss, a section of the oak bookshelf behind his chair swung open three inches, revealing a narrow, stone-lined corridor illuminated by emergency floor strip lights.

"A private elevator," Julian said. "It leads to the underground vault beneath the garage. Go down there, lock the door from the inside, and do not open it for anyone except me."

"I am not leaving you here alone!" I shouted, stepping toward his chair. "He's coming with armed men! You can't even stand!"

Julian looked up at me, a rare, faint smile touching the corners of his lips.

"I have spent ten years sitting in this chair, Miss Clara," he said softly. "They think I am a helpless cripple. They have forgotten that I was trained by the same monster who built this empire. Now go."

He slapped the wall panel. The heavy oak bookshelf began to swing shut.

"Wait!" I yelled, reaching through the closing gap.

May you like

"Go!" Julian commanded, his voice booming through the room like thunder.

The shelf snapped shut with a heavy, magnetic lock. The room disappeared, leaving me standing in the narrow, cold darkness of the secret passage as the heavy thud of boots echoed from the floor above.
