Chapter 6 - THE UNTRAVELLED PATH

The downfall of a man's pride is rarely a sudden explosion; it is a slow, agonizing leak that drains him until nothing remains but hollow space.

For Grant Whitmore, the months following the Metropolitan Healthcare Gala were a nightmare of self-inflicted isolation.

He broke off his relationship with Madison Blake three days after the gala, writing a check for two hundred thousand dollars to cover her apartment lease and medical expenses, telling her never to contact him again. She didn't fight him; she took the check, packed her designer bags, and vanished from his life within six hours, proving Claire's words with brutal precision.

He stopped attending corporate dinners. He handed the daily management of Whitmore Development over to his chief operating officer, spending his days locked inside the library of his Greenwich estate—the very house he had left to Claire in the divorce, and which he had bought back from her trust through an intermediary at a thirty percent markup just to feel her memory in the rooms.

He walked through the quiet, hollow corridors.

He sat in the sunroom where she used to read her books. He looked at the garden patches she had planted years ago—gardens he had complained were a waste of time and money—now overgrown with winter frost.

Every room was a courtroom, and every memory was a judge pronouncing him guilty.

He realized now that he hadn't fallen in love with Madison or the idea of a younger wife; he had fallen victim to the terrifying vanity of aging. He had looked into the mirror at fifty-two, seen the grey hairs and the lines around his eyes, and panicked. Instead of growing older with grace alongside the woman who had helped him build his world, he had tried to purchase youth, using his wealth as a shield against time.

And in doing so, he had thrown away the only true anchor he possessed.

On a freezing Tuesday morning in early November, Grant was sitting at his mahogany desk, staring at a cup of black coffee, when his phone rang.

It was Arthur Vance.

Grant picked it up slowly. "Arthur. I told you I don't need any more reports."

"I'm not calling with a report, Grant," Arthur said softly, his voice carrying an unusual warmth. "I'm calling because I thought you should know. It happened two hours ago."

Grant's heart stopped. "What happened?"

"Claire gave birth at Westbridge Medical Center," Arthur revealed. "A healthy baby boy. Eight pounds, two ounces. Both mother and child are doing fine."

Grant closed his eyes.

A single tear slid down his weathered cheek, soaking into the fabric of his collar.

"What... what did they name him?" Grant asked, his voice barely audible.

"Leo," Arthur replied. "Leo Ethan Mercer."

Leo.

Grant remembered twenty years ago, sitting on the sofa in this very room, holding a list of baby names they had written together during their second round of IVF. Claire had picked Leo if it was a boy, after her grandfather who had worked as a carpenter in Vermont. Grant had dismissed the name back then, calling it too simple, too working-class for a son of the Whitmore line. He had insisted on Grant Junior or Harrison.

Now, Ethan Mercer had given her the name she had wanted twenty years ago.

"Thank you, Arthur," Grant whispered.

"Grant..." Arthur paused, leaning into the phone. "Let it go now. It's over. Build yourself a new life."

Grant hung up the phone.

May you like

He walked to the large bay window looking out over the frosted grounds of the estate. The trees were bare, their black branches reaching up into the cold grey sky like desperate hands.

"It's over," he whispered to the empty room.
