Chapter 6 - TEN YEARS OF WAITING

The shadows around the private booth were deep enough to hide a small army.

As Claire stepped behind the decorative iron screen, the loud music of the lounge seemed to recede into a distant hum.

Ethan Park did not stand up immediately. He sat with effortless grace, his long legs crossed, one hand resting flat on the dark leather seat beside him.

"Claire," he said.

His voice was lower and deeper than she remembered from her childhood—a calm, resonant baritone that carried no panic, no hesitation, and no doubt.

Claire took a ragged breath, reaching out to touch the edge of the table to steady herself. "Ethan..."

Ethan stood up slowly. Up close, he was towering—six-foot-two of solid muscle draped in flawless charcoal wool. He stepped out of the shadow, the faint amber candlelight catching the sharp angles of his jawline and the intense, dark clarity of his eyes.

He didn't offer a polite handshake. He didn't offer a fake social smile.

He stepped directly to her, his dark eyes scanning her face, her eyes, her pale skin, and the silver diamond choker sitting tight against her throat.

"He’s hurting you," Ethan said flatly. It wasn't a question.

Claire felt tears spring to her eyes—not tears of weakness, but the overwhelming release of someone who had been drowning in silence for a hundred days and had finally found land.

"He’s taking everything, Ethan," she whispered, her voice trembling. "My father’s company... the real estate... he locked me out of the servers. He brought in armed guards to my home. He threatened to have me committed to a psychiatric facility if I don't sign the transfer papers tonight."

Ethan’s expression didn't change, but his eyes turned perceptibly darker—like storm clouds gathering over an open sea.

"He won't be committing anyone tonight," Ethan said quietly.

"How did you find me?" Claire asked, touching her temple. "How did you know what he was doing?"

Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a worn, black leather pocket watch. He flipped the silver latch open. Inside the cover, set behind a protective glass pane, was a small, black-and-white photograph of Thomas Whitmore standing beside a young Ethan on a dock in West Seattle.

"Ten years ago, your father saved my life," Ethan said softly, his thumb gently tracing the edge of the glass. "He spent four days taking care of a wounded kid who had nowhere else to go. When I left his house, I promised him that if I ever built something worth keeping, I would protect his legacy."

Ethan closed the watch with a soft, decisive click.

"Three months ago, my security network detected abnormal wire transfers originating from Whitmore Development's sub-accounts," Ethan continued. "I placed a surveillance team around your perimeter the next morning. I know about the shell companies in Nevada. I know about Sterling Capital. I know Derek Cole’s real name is Derek Krajewski."

Claire’s eyes widened in shock. "Krajewski?"

"A professional con man working for a syndicate out of Chicago," Ethan explained coldly. "He targets grieving women, isolates them from their advisors, drains their liquid assets through predatory loans, and transfers ownership to offshore holdings."

"My God..." Claire choked out, covering her mouth with her hand. "I brought him into my father’s house. I trusted him."

"You were grieving, Claire," Ethan said, his voice softening slightly as he stepped closer to her. "You were alone, tired, and surrounded by people who wanted a piece of what your father built. You did nothing wrong."

He reached out. For a second, Claire thought he was going to touch her face, but Ethan restrained himself, resting his hand gently on the back of the leather chair beside her.

"I promised your father one thing, Claire," Ethan murmured, locking his eyes onto hers with unyielding intensity. "He told me that if you ever became trapped, and if you were too proud or too terrified to ask for help, I should recognize the silence."

"I was terrified," Claire admitted, a hot tear slipping down her cheek.

"I know," Ethan said. "That’s why I waited ten years for this moment. To give you back your life."

"Claire?"

A cold, sharp voice suddenly cut through the air behind the iron screen.

Derek stood ten feet away at the edge of the booth area. He held a glass of scotch in his right hand, his face flushed red with anger as he looked from Claire to the tall, dark-suited man standing beside her.

"What the hell are you doing over here?" Derek snapped, stepping around the iron screen. His eyes swept over Ethan, taking in the flawless charcoal suit, the commanding posture, and the complete lack of fear in Ethan’s posture.

Derek’s grip tightened around his glass.

"Who are you?" Derek demanded, stepping closer to Claire, reaching out his left hand to grab her wrist. "Claire, get over here right now. We’re leaving."

Before Derek’s fingers could even touch the fabric of Claire’s sleeve, Ethan stepped smoothly between them.

The movement was effortless, silent, and completely blocking Derek’s line of sight to Claire.

Ethan looked down at Derek from his six-foot-two height, his eyes cold, flat, and devoid of any emotion.

"Keep your hands to yourself," Ethan said softly.

Derek laughed—a sharp, arrogant bark of laughter meant to cover the sudden spike of unease settling in his gut.

"Do you have any idea who I am, pal?" Derek sneered, stepping up into Ethan’s space. "I’m Derek Cole. I run Whitmore Development. This is my private VIP lounge, and that is my fiancée."

Ethan didn't move an inch. He didn't raise his hands. He didn't shift his stance.

"You don't run Whitmore Development," Ethan said in a quiet, measured voice that cut through the background music like a blade. "You run a fraudulent shell company registered in Carson City under the name Krajewski. And as of forty-five minutes ago, your credit lines at Seattle Commercial Bank have been permanently frozen."

Derek’s face drained of color so fast it was as if someone had drained the blood directly from his head.

His jaw went slack. The smug, arrogant grin vanished completely.

"What... what did you say?" Derek stammered.

"Your syndicate partners in Chicago have already been notified that their maritime shipping routes through Terminal 18 are revoked," Ethan added calmly. "You are broke, Krajewski. And your time in this city is over."
